Charpai, Charpaya, Charpoy, Khat or Manji (Tamil :கட்டில் Hindi : चारपाई, Bengali: চারপায়া, Urdu: چارپائی, Saraiki, Punjabi; ''char'' "four" + ''paya'' "footed") is a traditional woven bed used across South Asia. Regional variations are found in Afghanistan and Pakistan, North and Central India, Bihar and Myanmar. It is also known as khaat, khatia, or manji, and as manjaa in Punjab. The charpai is a simple design that is easy to construct. It was traditionally made out of a wooden frame and natural-fiber ropes, but modern charpais may have metal frames and plastic tapes. The frame is four strong vertical posts connected by four horizontal members; the design makes the construction self-leveling. Webbing can be made out of cotton, date leaves, and other natural fibers. Niwar (cotton Tape)
''Niwar'' (''newar, niwar, nivar'') is a broad, thick cotton tape that was originally produced in India's product of cottage industry, it is a kind of coarse cotton tape used to form the web of a charpai (a bed base). Cottage industry Niwar was, like many tapes and strings, originally a products of handloom industry. These products were partly manufactured in jails of the Punjab region during the 19th century. In the 21st century Niwar is produced by machines and is made from both cotton and synthetic materials. Besides charpais, Niwar is used in many furniture items of wood and metal, such as folding beds. Niwar is traded with a HS code. A rope bed is a type of platform bed in which the sleeper (and mattress) is supported by a lattice of rope, rather than wooden slats. In cold climates, a rope bed would be topped with one or more insulating palliasse or bedticks, which would traditionally be stuffed with straw, chaff, or down feathers. It might also have a canopy hung with warm curtains. Modernly, they may be topped by a thin futon (a form of bedtick) or other roll-up mattress (see mattress topper). In the sixteenth century (England?), bedmats of woven or plaited rush were often laid on the widely-spaced ropes, and the bedticks were laid on the mats. This stopped them from bulging between the ropes. Rope beds need to be tightened regularly (with a bed wrench, and sometimes with wedges) as they sag. They must also be re-strung occasionally; re-stringing reduces sag and evens out wear. When fully or partly unstrung, rope beds can be packed flat for transport.
