Charni Road
Charni Road (Marathi pronunciation: ͡ʃəɾniː ɾoːɖ is a neighbourhood in the southern part of Mumbai. It is served by Charni Road railway station. History It is believed that when the British Government raised a grazing tax on people bringing their cattle to graze on the grass at the Azad Maidan, Jamshedjee Jeejeebhoy purchased the grasslands near Thakurdwar out of his own funds and opened those grounds to the locals to graze their cattle for free. As the Marathi word for grazing is "charne", the area came to be known as Charni ... and thence, the road beside it, as the Charni Road. According to another source, the word is a corruption of "Chendni", a locality in the Thane-Koliwada area. Many people originally from Chendni migrated to south Mumbai to the area which is known today as Charni Road. Charni Road Railway Station
Charni Road (formerly Churney Road, station code: CYR) is a railway station on the Western Line of the Mumbai Suburban Railway. It serves the suburb of Charni Road. The main significance of Charni Road station is that it is near the Girgaum Chowpatty beach and Marine Drive promenade, a major destination for tourists in Mumbai. It is also important because of the diamond trading industry located here, mainly in the Panchratna and Prasad chambers building near the railway station. The word 'Charni' is derived from the Marathi word Charne''' (t''o graze''), as the area was once used as a grazing ground for cattle and horses. In 1838, the British rulers introduced a 'grazing fee' which several cattle-owners could not afford. Therefore, Sir Jamshedji Jeejeebhoy spent 20,000 from his own purse for purchasing some grasslands near the seafront at Thakurdwar and saw that the starving cattle grazed without a fee in that area. Charni Ekangamene
Charni Ekangamene (born 16 February 1994) is a Belgian footballer who plays as a midfielder for Rupel Boom in the Belgian First National Division. Born in Antwerp, he began his career with Royal Antwerp before moving to their English sister club, Manchester United, in 2010. Having failed to break into the first-team, he was loaned to Carlisle United in January 2014, before making a permanent move back to Belgium with Zulte Waregem in July 2014. Club career Born in Antwerp, Ekangamene began his career with local club Royal Antwerp.
