Charmaine Cree
Charmaine Cree (born 1952) is an Australian athlete who won five medals at the 1980 Arnhem Paralympics Personal In 1976, when she was 24, Cree had her left leg amputated below the knee due to bone cancer. She has two sons, who were aged seven and nine in 1979. They nicknamed her "The only bionic Mum in Sydney"; they also trained in athletics with her. Career A year after her operation, Cree won five medals at the Australian Amputee Sporting Association's New South Wales competition. She then won two gold medals at the 1977 FESPIC Games, and won six gold medals in the Australian Amputee Sporting Association's Queensland championships in 1979. At the 1980 Arnhem Paralympics, she won a gold medal in the Women's High Jump C event, a silver medal in the Women's Long Jump C event, and three bronze medals in the Women's 100 m C, Women's Discus C, and Women's Javelin C events. 1980 Summer Paralympics
The 1980 Summer Paralympics ( nl, Paralympische Zomerspelen 1980), branded as the Olympics for the Disabled, were the sixth Summer Paralympic Games. They were held in Arnhem, Netherlands, from 21 to 30 June 1980. Background The Soviet Union, hosts of the 1980 Summer Olympics, were invited to host these Paralympics. However, disability sport was not there, and they passed; notoriously, a statement was issued denying the existence of any disabled people in the country. Soviet Paralympic teams were first represented in the 1988 Summer and Winter Games, also the last while the Soviet Union was extant. The first Paralympics on former Soviet territory would be in 2014. There was controversy during the preparation for these Games over the inclusion of a team from South Africa. FESPIC Games Competitors
The FESPIC Games or the Far East and South Pacific Games for the Disabled, was a multi-sport event in Asia and the South Pacific region which is considered to be a precursor to the Asian Para Games, as two of its edition games in 1999 (7th) and 2002 (8th) were held parallel to the 1998 Asian Games and the 2002 Asian Games. The event which started in 1975 was held nine times, and last contested in December 2006 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
