Charlotte Roller Derby
Charlotte Roller Derby (CLTRD), formerly Charlotte Roller Girls, is a women's flat track roller derby league based in Charlotte, North Carolina, operating as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Founded in 2006, Charlotte Roller Derby is a member of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). Charlotte Roller Derby consists of two travel teams, three local home teams, and one co-ed youth team. Adult travel teams consist of the "Charlotte All-Stars" representing the league internationally in competition and B team Charlotte's "B-Dazzlers". Three adult local home teams play only in Charlotte, NC and surrounding areas and consists of the "NoDa Narwhals", "Ballantyne Bombers" and "South End Sirens". NoDa
NoDa (short for "North Davidson") is a popular arts district in Charlotte, North Carolina, United States. It is located in the North Charlotte neighborhood on and around North Davidson Street and 36th Street, approximately one mile northeast of Uptown. Formerly an area of textile manufacturing and mill workers' residences, the area has also served as a center for the arts. NoDa shares the same geography as Historic North Charlotte which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The name "NoDa" was coined by architect Russell Pound. The Women's Flat Track Derby Association Division 3 (WFTDA Division 3) was the third level of play in women's flat track roller derby, from 2013 through 2014. Organisation Historically, the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) operated four regions, based on geographic location: East Region (WFTDA), East, North Central Region (WFTDA), North Central, South Central Region (WFTDA), South Central and West Region (WFTDA), West. WFTDA Championships
The International Women's Flat Track Derby Association Championships ("WFTDA Championships" or "Champs" for short) are the leading competition for roller derby leagues. The Championships are organised by the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). They originated in 2006 as the National WFTDA Championship. The "Dust Devil" tournament was contested in front of several thousand fans in Tucson, Arizona. Women's Flat Track Derby Association Rankings
Rankings for the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) are used to determine placement in overall standings (rather than win–loss record) and also to determine seedings at WFTDA Playoffs. Achieving high rankings is also a goal for teams aiming to increase their stature in the organization. Each year at the end of June, teams are seeded into Division 1 and Division 2 playoff tournaments. Historically, the top 40 teams in the WFTDA as of June 30 were eligible for Division 1 tournaments that season, and the teams ranked 41–60 were eligible for Division 2 tournaments. For 2017, the Division 1 cutoff was reduced to the top 36 teams, with the next 16 teams qualifying for Division 2 Playoffs. The Women's Flat Track Derby Association Division 2 (WFTDA Division 2) was the second-highest level of play in women's flat track roller derby from 2013 through 2017. Grady Cole Center
Grady Cole Center is a small civic center located on the campus of Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, North Carolina. The 3,000 seat center is located near the city's center, and can host several types of events. It was built in 1954 to replace the Charlotte Armory Auditorium, which had been destroyed by fire. Originally the Charlotte Park Center, it was renamed in 1987 in honor of WBT Radio morning personality, Grady Cole. The arena is a part of the Mecklenburg County Sportsplex, which also includes the American Legion Memorial Stadium. East Region (WFTDA)
The WFTDA's East Region was formed in 2006. In 2009, teams from the western part of the region were moved into the North Central and South Central Regions. In 2008, WFTDA changed from having just two regional tournaments (East and West), to five, made up of teams from four regions: East, North Central, South Central and West. Members of the WFTDA's Europe Region competed in the East Region, as did members in the eastern part of the Canada Region. WFTDA has now moved away from the Big 5 WFTDA Championships qualification tournament structure, last competed in 2012. WFTDA Apprentice Program
The Women's Flat Track Derby Association Apprentice is the program affiliate of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). In operation from 2009 until early 2019, the Apprentice Program served to onboard new member leagues into the WFTDA. In February 2019, the WFTDA announced it was retiring the program, to be replaced with a new "New Member Program" in the near future. History In July 2009, the WFTDA announced its new apprentice program for aspiring member leagues that replaced its traditional membership application process.
