Charlotte Harbor is a census-designated place (CDP) in Charlotte County, Florida, United States. The name Charlotte Harbor also refers to Charlotte Harbor (estuary) and Charlotte Harbor Preserve State Park, a preserve with of shoreline along Charlotte Harbor in Charlotte County. The population of Charlotte Harbor was 3,784 in 2020, up from 3,710 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Punta Gorda, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area and included in the North Port-Bradenton, Florida Combined Statistical Area. Geography Charlotte Harbor is located at (26.963897, -82.062267) on the north bank of the Peace River, the main tidal inlet to the Charlotte Harbor estuary, itself an arm of the Gulf of Mexico. Hurricane Charley
Hurricane Charley was the first of four separate hurricanes to impact or strike Florida during 2004, along with Frances, Ivan and Jeanne, as well as one of the strongest hurricanes ever to strike the United States. It was the third named storm, the second hurricane, and the second major hurricane of the 2004 Atlantic hurricane season. Charley lasted from August 9 to 15, and at its peak intensity it attained winds, making it a strong Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir–Simpson scale. The Albert W. Gilchrist Bridge is a bridge in Charlotte County, Florida, crossing the Peace River between Port Charlotte, Florida, and Punta Gorda, Florida. The two-lane 45-foot-tall structure carries the southbound lanes of U.S. Route 41 (Tamiami Trail). US 41's northbound lanes are carried over the river on the adjacent Barron Collier Bridge. It was named for former Florida Governor Albert W. Gilchrist, who resided in Punta Gorda. History The Gilchrist Bridge opened for traffic on July 4, 1976. It was built to make U.S. 41 a four lane highway over the Peace River. When the Gilchrist Bridge opened, the original Barron Collier Bridge was still in service, which was a low-level drawbridge. The Barron Collier Bridge is a bridge in Charlotte County, Florida that crosses the Peace River connecting Punta Gorda, Florida and Port Charlotte, Florida. It is 45 feet tall and carries two northbound lanes of U.S. Route 41 (Tamiami Trail). The southbound lanes cross the river on the adjacent Gilchrist Bridge. It was named for Barron G.
