Charlotte Gold
The Carolina Lightnin' was an American soccer club based in Charlotte, North Carolina that was a member of the American Soccer League. The Lightnin' played home matches at American Legion Memorial Stadium. Attendance at home games averaged 6,000 spectators. 20,163 fans attended the September 1981 match against the New York United in which the Lightnin' won the American Soccer League championship by a score of 2–1. After the ASL folded, the club joined the newly formed United Soccer League as the Charlotte Gold. However, the team folded at the end of the 1984 season. Pro soccer returned to the city in the form of the Charlotte Eagles in 1993. Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer, is a team sport played between two teams of 11 players who primarily use their feet to propel the ball around a rectangular field called a pitch. Stuart Lee
Stuart Lee (born 11 February 1953) is an English former football forward. Lee was born in Manchester, and played professionally in England, Wales and the United States. Player In 1971, Lee began his professional career when he signed with Bolton Wanderers. He was seventeen at the time. He spent three season in the second and third Division of the Football League with Bolton before transferring to third division Wrexham At the time, Wrexham experienced considerable success in both the FA Cup and European competitions. In 1976, they went to the quarterfinals of the Cup Winners Cup where Lee scored the team's lone goal in a 2–1 aggregate loss to R.S.C. Anderlecht. He spent two seasons with Wrexham before moving to Stockport County in 1978. He spent only one season with Stockport before moving to the first division with Manchester City. Santiago Formoso
Santiago Formoso (born July 4, 1953) is an American soccer defender who spent five seasons in the North American Soccer League. He also earned seven caps with the U.S. national team in 1976 and 1977. Club career Santiago Formoso was born in Vigo, Spain, 1953. He emigrated to the United States in 1969, following his father, a merchant seaman. He established in Newark, New Jersey, and attended Kearny High School, graduating in 1973. He also played with Newark Beira-Mar. His father became a cook in Long Island, while his mother worked in a clothing factory. His father died of cancer in 1974. After high school, Formoso attended the University of Pennsylvania where he played on the men’s soccer team. While at university, he became a U.S. citizen. Hugh O'Neill (born July 16, 1954) is a retired American soccer player who played professionally in the North American Soccer League, Scottish First Division, American Soccer League and Major Indoor Soccer League. Early life Born and raised in Kearny, New Jersey, O'Neill graduated from Essex Catholic High School before playing soccer at the Scots Club, and the University of Bridgeport where he was a 1973 and 1975 All American soccer player. Playing career Club In 1975, O'Neill turned professional with the Hartford Bicentennials of the North American Soccer League. The following fall, the Bicentennials sent him on loan to Glasgow Rangers F.C. of the Scottish League. Dave Power (soccer)
Dave Power is an English-born, American retired professional footballer. Career Power was born and Liverpool, and played on the Everton F.C. youth squad. He began his professional career in Ireland with Waterford F.C. In 1975 while the club was touring the U.S., Waterford struck an on-loan deal for his services with New York Apollo during the summer months. After the 1977 season, he decided to move to the U.S. permanently and signed with the Apollo, winning the ASL title in 1978. In 1981 he followed former Apollo's head coach, Rodney Marsh to the Carolina Lightnin' for three seasons and won his second ASL title. In 1984 he again followed Marsh, this time to the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the NASL, but a broken leg in a friendly against Stoke City F.C. abruptly ended his season after making only one league appearance. Derek Smethurst
Derek Smethurst (born 24 October 1947, in Durban) is a retired South African soccer forward who played professionally in South Africa, England and the United States. Biography Born into a sporting family, both his father Norman and brother Peter played professionally. Smethurst spent time with three amateur teams, Glenwood, Berea Park and Addington, in his early career. He began his professional career with Durban City F.C. In December 1968, he transferred to Chelsea F.C. He spent the remainder of the 1968–1969 and the entire 1969–1970 season with the Chelsea Reserves. Despite missing a large part of the 1969–1970 season with an injury, Smethurst still compiled 20 goals in 42 games with the reserves. He made his first team debut on 1 September 1970. Mal Roche (born in Coventry) is an English retired football forward who played seven seasons in the American Soccer League and at least one in the Major Indoor Soccer League. He was the 1977 ASL Rookie of the Year and the 1980 ASL Leading Scorer. Youth Born in England, Roche grew up in California where he became a U.S. citizen in the early 1970s. He attended the University of San Francisco where he played on the men's soccer team from 1973 to 1976. He was a member of the Don's 1975 and 1976 NCAA championship teams. USF inducted Roche into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002. Roche also played for the San Francisco Athletic Club's soccer team during the mid to late 1970s.
