Charlotte Cooper (born 1968) is a London-based British writer and outspoken advocate for gay rights and fat acceptance. Biography She describes herself as "queer, from a working-class background, white, middle-aged, and have a load of higher education. I have poly relationships and am sort-of femme". Cooper is both an academic and mainstream author. She has published articles in academic journals such as '' Disability and Society'' and is herself a board member of ''Fat Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Body Weight and Society''. She has written many articles on fat acceptance and gay rights issues for websites, magazines and newspapers, including ''Diva'', the UK's leading lesbian magazine, and UK national newspaper ''The Guardian''. Charlotte "Chattie" Cooper Sterry (née Charlotte Reinagle Cooper; 22 September 1870 – 10 October 1966) was an English female tennis player who won five singles titles at the Wimbledon Championships and in 1900 became Olympic champion. In winning in Paris on 11 July 1900, she became the first female Olympic tennis champion as well as the first individual female Olympic champion. Early life and career Charlotte Cooper was born on 22 September 1870 at Waldham Lodge, Ealing, Middlesex, England, the youngest daughter of Henry Cooper, a miller, and his wife Teresa Georgiana Miller. She learned to play tennis at the Ealing Lawn Tennis Club where she was first coached by H. Lawrence and later by Charles Martin and Harold Mahony. She won her first senior singles title in 1893 at Ilkley. Between 1893 and 1917 she participated in 21 Wimbledon tournaments. Vernon Andrade
Vernon Andrade (April 24, 1902, Panama – February 8, 1966, New York City) was an American jazz bandleader active primarily in New York City in the 1920s and 1930s. Andrade played violin as a teenager and moved to New York in the early 1920s, holding a position in Deacon Johnson's orchestra. He picked up double-bass in 1923 and became a bandleader around the same time. He married Charlotte Cooper and moved to a brownstone in the Bedford Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn. Oddly enough he and Carmen McRae were neighbors and in-laws. He held a regular gig at the Renaissance Casino and also worked the Alhambra Ballroom in Harlem, which featured high-level dancing. Frankie Manning was among Andrade's admirers. He remained at the Renaissance until 1938; members of his band included Pete Briggs, Ernest Hill, and Zutty Singleton. Helen Humes recorded with Andrade's band on Okeh Records, but other than this, Andrade recorded little in his career, and was largely forgotten as a result. ... The Subways
The Subways is an English rock band from Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire. Formed in 2002, the band consists of Billy Lunn (lead vocals, guitar), Charlotte Cooper (bass guitar, lead vocals), and Camille Phillips (drums). Founding-drummer Josh Morgan left the band for personal reasons in October 2020. The Subways's debut album, '' Young for Eternity'', was released on 4 July 2005 in the UK and 14 February 2006 in the U.S. Their second album, '' All or nothing'', was released on 30 June 2008 and their third album ''Money and Celebrity'' debuted on 19 September 2011. The band's self-titled fourth album was released on 9 February 2015. History Beginnings (2002-2004) The Subways name comes from a time when Lunn, Morgan and Cooper used to hang around the local subway underpass which ran underneath a Welwyn Garden City roundabout.
