Charlie Gjedde
Charlie Rasmussen Gjedde (born 28 December 1979 in Holstebro, Denmark) is a former international motorcycle speedway rider from Denmark, who won the Speedway World Cup with Denmark in 2006. Career A former Danish Under-21 Champion, Gjedde has represented Denmark in the Speedway World Cup since 2002 and has appeared as a track reserve in the Speedway Grand Prix series three times. He first rode in Britain for Swindon Robins during the 1998 Elite League speedway season. In 2003, he was part of the Swindon four that won the Premier League Four-Team Championship, which was held on 27 July 2003, at the Abbey Stadium. He rode for the Belle Vue Aces in the Elite League in 2008, 2009 and 2011. In 2010, He rode for Outrup in the Danish Speedway League. Orzeł Łódź (''Eagle Lodz'') is a Polish motorcycle speedway team based in Łódź who currently race in the Polish Speedway First League (1. Liga). The club's full name is H. Skrzydlewska Eagle Lodz. Stadium The club hold their meetings at the Moto Arena Łódź, which opened in July 2018. History of speedway in Łódź Tramwajarz Łódź and DKS Łódź Speedway in Łódź began in 1948 with two clubs called Tramwajarz Łódź (tram drivers) and DKS Łódź. Both Tramwajarz and DKS competed in the inaugural 1948 Polish speedway season. Three years later the club moved to Bytom and changed their name to Ogniwo, before returning a year later. In 1954, the club became Sparta before but changed again to its original name of Tramwajarz before the club disbanded in 1964. The Premier League Four-Team Championship was a contest between teams competing in the Premier League in the United Kingdom. Eight teams are grouped into fours, with one rider from each team in each race. The winners and second place of each group competed for the Championship in the final. History The competition replaced the National League Four-Team Championship (held from 1976 until 1994). It was first staged in 1995 when the Premier League was the highest tier of British speedway because the top two divisions had merged. 1998 Elite League Speedway Season
The 1998 Elite League speedway season was the 64th season of the top tier of speedway in the United Kingdom and the second year known as the Elite League, governed by the Speedway Control Board (SCB) in conjunction with the British Speedway Promoters' Association (BSPA). Summary In 1998, the league decreased to nine teams with the closure of the Bradford Dukes at the end of their championship winning season in 1997. The Peterborough Panthers dropped down to the Premier League but were replaced by the Oxford Cheetahs. The league operated on a standard format without play-offs. Ipswich Witches won the league (their first since 1984) and cup double and were led by the world's leading rider Tony Rickardsson. Speedway Grand Prix
Speedway Grand Prix are a series of stand-alone motorcycle speedway events over the course of a season used to determine the Speedway World Champion. The series started in 1995 replacing the previous format of a single event final. The first winner was Hans Nielsen of Denmark. Event format The format for a Grand Prix changed for the 2007 season onwards. Sixteen riders take part in each Grand Prix and over the course of twenty heats each rider will race against every other rider once. The top eight scorers advance to a semi-final and from each semi-final the 1st and 2nd placed riders will advance to the GP final. In this format all rides counted towards Grand Prix points totals, including the semi-final and final, the maximum points for a single GP is 21 (5x heat wins, semi final win and final win). Denmark is one of the major teams in international speedway. They are managed by Denmark's most successful speedway rider, four time Individual World Champion Hans Nielsen and the current captain is Niels-Kristian Iversen. They have won the Speedway World Cup / Speedway World Team Cup a record 15 occasions with team manager Nielsen being a rider on 11 of those teams. Motorcycle Speedway
Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). The Elite League Pairs Championship was a motorcycle speedway contest between the top two riders from each club competing in the Elite League (speedway), Elite League in the United Kingdom, staged from 2004 to 2011. History The Championship was a reincarnation of the British League Pairs Championship, which ran from 1976 until 1987. After the eighth running of the competition in 2011 the Championship was discontinued. Speedway World Cup
The Speedway World Cup is an annual motorcycle speedway, speedway event held each year in different countries. The first edition of the competition in the current format was held in 2001 and replaced the old Speedway World Team Cup, World Team Cup which ran from 1960 until 2000. The last edition was in 2017. From 2018, the World Cup was replaced by the Speedway of Nations, which effectively brought back the pairs format. However, in 2023 the World Cup will return. Format The final tournament usually lasted for about a week with four meetings held in six or seven days. It started with two first round "events", each consisting of four national teams. The 2006 Speedway World Cup (SWC) was the 6th FIM Speedway World Cup season. The Final took place on 22 July 2006 in the Smallmead Stadium in Reading, Berkshire, Great Britain. The tournament was won by Denmark (45 pts) and they beat Sweden (37 pts), host team Great Britain (36 pts) and Australia (35 pts) in the Final.
