Grupo Niche
Grupo Niche is a salsa (music), salsa group founded in 1978 in Bogotá, Colombia. In 1982, the group settled in the city of Santiago de Cali, Cali, Colombia, enjoying great popularity throughout Latin America. It was founded by :es:Jairo Varela, Jairo Varela and :es:Alexis Lozano, Alexis Lozano. Varela remained with the group throughout his life, serving as producer, director, songwriter, vocalist and guiro player. Alexis Lozano, trombone player and arranger later left to form :es:Orquesta Guayacán, Orquesta Guayacán. The group also included Nicolas Cristancho "Macabi" on the piano, Francisco Garcia "Porky" on the bass, Luis Pacheco, on the congas, and vocalists Jorge Bazán and Hector Viveros. Grupo Niche's first album, "Al Pasito", released in 1979, did little to challenge the dominating salsa band of Colombia at the time, Fruko y sus Tesos. Premio Lo Nuestro 1999
The 11th Lo Nuestro Awards ceremony, presented by Univision honoring the best Latin music of 1998 and 1999 took place on May 6, 1999, at a live presentation held at the James L. Knight Center in Miami, Florida. The ceremony was broadcast in the United States and Latin America by Univision. During the ceremony, nineteen categories were presented. Winners were announced at the live event and included Puerto-Rican American singer Elvis Crespo receiving five competitive awards. Other multiple winners were Mexican singer-songwriter Pepe Aguilar with three wins, fellow Mexican band Maná and Colombian performer Shakira with two awards each. Aguilar earned the award for Regional Mexican Album of the Year, Crespo won for Tropical/Salsa Album of the Year, and the Pop Album of the Year was presented as a tie between Maná and Shakira. The Lo Nuestro Award for Tropical/Salsa New Artist of the Year is an honor presented annually by American network Univision. It was first awarded in 1989 and has been given annually since to recognize the most talented performers of Latin music. The nominees and winners were originally selected by a voting poll conducted among program directors of Spanish-language radio stations in the United States and also based on chart performance on ''Billboard'' Latin music charts, with the results being tabulated and certified by the accounting firm Deloitte. At the present time, the winners are selected by the audience through an online survey. The trophy awarded is shaped in the form of a treble clef. The award was first presented to Nicaraguan singer Luis Enrique.
