Charleston Commercial Historic District
The Charleston Commercial Historic District encompasses the historic commercial center of Charleston, Arkansas. Extending along East Main Street (Arkansas Highway 22) between Tilden Street and Arkansas Highway 217, the district includes primarily single-story masonry commercial buildings built between 1900 and 1940. Notable exceptions are the Franklin County Courthouse, Southern District, and the Methodist Episcopal Church. Arkansas Highway 22
Highway 22 (AR 22, Ark. 22, and Hwy. 22) is an east–west state highway in the Arkansas River Valley. It is maintained by the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD). The highway runs from US 64/ US 71B east to Highway 7 in Dardanelle. Following the historic stagecoach line of the cross-country Butterfield Trail, the highway is one of the original 1926 state highways. It is designated by the AHTD as the 'True Grit Trail''. Route description The route begins in Fort Smith at US 64/ US 71B. It runs east, crossing I-540/ US 71 and the incomplete interchange at the northern end of future I-49. From its western terminus in Fort Smith it carries the Seminole route of the Trail of Tears to AR 255 where the historic route follows AR 255 heading north. Generally the two-digit odd numbered highways run north–south with a few exceptions; and even-numbered two-digit state highways run east–west with a few exceptions. Arkansas has long had a stigma of poor roads, dating from the "Arkansas Roads Scandal" playing a prominent role in state politics through the 1920s and 1930s, periodic allegations of corruption, waste, and fraud, and a long-running struggle to adequately fund the operation, maintenance and expansion of a large highway system serving a rural state. Charleston is a city in Franklin County, Arkansas, United States, and along with Ozark is one of the two county seats of Franklin County. It is part of the Fort Smith, Arkansas-Oklahoma Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 2,494 at the 2010 census, down from 2,965 in 2000. History Charleston was platted in 1870. Franklin County Courthouse, Southern District
The Franklin County Courthouse, Southern District is located at 607 East Main Street (Arkansas Highway 22) in Charleston, Arkansas. It is a -story brick building, its bays divided by brick pilasters, and its roof topping a metal cornice. Its entrance is framed by brick pilasters with cast stone heads, and topped by a round arch with a cast stone keystone. The building was built in 1923 to a design by Little Rock, Arkansas, Little Rock architect Frank Gibb. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Franklin County, Arkansas
Franklin County is a county in Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 18,125. The county has two county seats, Charleston and Ozark. The county was formed on December 19, 1837, and named for Benjamin Franklin, American statesman. To the north of the Arkansas River, which bisects Franklin County, the county is wet and alcohol is sold in liquor stores, bars and local vineyards. To the south of the Arkansas River, the county is dry. History Franklin County was carved out of Crawford County in December 1837.
