Charles William Digby Clifford
Charles William Digby Clifford (October 14, 1842 – May 10, 1916) was an Irish-born miner, trader, hotel owner and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Cassiar from 1898 to 1903 and Skeena from 1903 to 1907 as a Conservative in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. He was born in Carrick-on-Shannon, County Leitrim, the son of Reverend R. S. Clifford and Harriet Young, and was educated in London. In 1888, he married Lucy Margaret McNeill. Clifford was a postmaster for the Hudson's Bay Company at Hazelton from 1885 to 1887; he was employed as a clerk there from 1887 to 1891 and at Fort Simpson from 1891 to 1896. He later owned a hotel and general store in Kitselas. In 1912, in partnership with Nels Anderson and John Walker "Jack" Patterson, he built the Nicholl Hotel. Hazelton, British Columbia
Hazelton is a village located at the junction of the Bulkley and Skeena Rivers in northern British Columbia, Canada. It was founded in 1866 and in 2011 had a population of 305. The nearby larger community of New Hazelton is the northernmost point of the Yellowhead Highway, a major interprovincial highway which runs from Prince Rupert, British Columbia, to Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. Kitselas, British Columbia
Kitselas, also Kitsalas, is an unincorporated settlement, otherwise known as Kitselas Indian Reserve No. 1 of the Kitselas subgroup of the Tsimshian people located on the Skeena River in northwestern British Columbia, Canada. Kitselas means "people of the village at the canyon" in the Tsimshian language. The band government of the Kitselas people is the Kitselas First Nation, headquartered at Gitaus, another location within the canyon. The name is also that of the Canadian National Railway point in this area. It originally was to be named, or was proposed to be named "Vanarsdol" for C.C. Van Arsdoll, an engineer for the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway who was responsible for construction of its route through the Rocky Mountains. His nickname was "Four-tenths Van", earned as a result of his famous ultimatum to surveyors that the grade of the railway route was not to exceed four-tenths of one percent. Fort Simpson
Fort Simpson (Slavey language: ''Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́'' "place where rivers come together") is a village, the only one in the entire territory, in the Dehcho Region of the Northwest Territories, Canada. The community is located on an island at the confluence of the Mackenzie River, Mackenzie and Liard River, Liard rivers. It is approximately west of Yellowknife. Both rivers were traditionally trade routes for the Hudson's Bay Company and the native Dene people of the area. Fort Simpson is the regional centre of the Dehcho and is the gateway to the scenic South Nahanni River and the Nahanni National Park Reserve.
