Charles Wallace Smith
Charles Wallace Smith (April 22, 1864August 11, 1939) was a state legislator in Michigan. He served as Speaker of the Michigan House of Representatives from 1915 to 1916. He was a Republican. Early life Smith was born on April 22, 1864, in Oregon Township, Michigan, to parents Hiram and Ann Smith. Career Before being elected to the legislature, Smith worked as treasurer-secretary for the Lapeer Gas-Electric Company. In the state legislature, Smith represented Lapeer County from 1911 to 1916. From 1915 to 1916, he also served as Speaker of the Michigan House of Representatives. Smith was the alternate delegate to the Republican National Convention from Michigan in 1912 and 1920. The Republican National Convention (RNC) is a series of presidential nominating conventions held every four years since 1856 by the United States Republican Party. They are administered by the Republican National Committee. The goal of the Republican National Convention is to officially nominate and confirm a candidate for president and vice president, adopt a comprehensive party platform and unify the party, as well as publicize and launch the fall campaign. ''The Times Herald'' is a daily newspaper in Port Huron, Michigan. The newspaper, owned by Gannett, is the only daily paper serving St. Clair County, Michigan as well as parts of Sanilac and Lapeer counties. ''The Times Herald'' history can be dated back to 1869 with the founding of the ''Port Huron Times''. The ''Daily Herald'', another Port Huron newspaper, was founded in 1900. The two merged and began issuing a single issue, the ''Port Huron Times Herald'', on April 4, 1910. The paper was purchased by Gannett in 1970. ''The Times Herald'' was the owner of one of Port Huron's early radio stations. In December 1947, WTTH was launched on AM 1360 and moved to AM 1380 in 1949. Michigan Senate
The Michigan Senate is the upper house of the Michigan Legislature. Along with the Michigan House of Representatives, it composes the state legislature, which has powers, roles and duties defined by Article IV of the Michigan Constitution, adopted in 1963. The primary purpose of the Legislature is to enact new laws and amend or repeal existing laws. The Michigan Senate is composed of 38 members, each elected from a single-member district with a population of between approximately 212,400 to 263,500 residents. Legislative districts are drawn on the basis of population figures, provided by the federal decennial census. Senators' terms begin immediately upon their election. Republicans hold the majority in the State Senate with twenty-two seats; Democrats hold the minority with sixteen seats.
