Charles S. Hartman
Charles Sampson Hartman (March 1, 1861 – August 3, 1929) was a U.S. Representative from Montana. Born in Monticello, Indiana, Hartman attended the public schools and Wabash College in Crawfordsville. He moved to Bozeman, Montana, in January 1882. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1884, and began practicing in Bozeman. He was a probate judge of Gallatin County 1884–1886. He served as member of the State constitutional convention in 1889. Hartman was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-third and Fifty-fourth Congresses. He was reelected as a Silver Republican to the Fifty-fifth Congress and served from March 4, 1893 to March 3, 1899. He declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1898. He served as delegate to the 1896 Republican National Convention. He resumed the practice of law. He became affiliated with the Democratic Party in 1900. The 1900 Democratic National Convention was a United States presidential nominating convention that took place the week of July 4, 1900, at Convention Hall in Kansas City, Missouri. The convention nominated William Jennings Bryan for president and former Vice President Adlai E. Stevenson was nominated for vice president. The ticket was to lose the general election to the Republican ticket of William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. Albert James Campbell (December 12, 1857 – August 9, 1907) was a U.S. Representative from Montana. Born in Pontiac, Michigan, Campbell attended the common schools and the State Agricultural College, Lansing (now Michigan State University). He taught school for several years, and then studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1881 and commenced practice in Oxford, Michigan. He moved to Clarke, Michigan, in 1882, and resumed the practice of law. He served as prosecuting attorney of Lake County, Michigan, from 1886 to 1888 when he resigned. He moved to Butte, Montana, on November 16, 1889, and continued the practice of his profession. He served as member of the Montana House of Representatives in 1897. Campbell was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-sixth Congress (March 4, 1899 – March 3, 1901). Fort Benton is a city in and the county seat of Chouteau County, Montana, United States. Established in 1846, Fort Benton is the oldest continuously occupied settlement in Montana.
