Charles S. Barrett Building
The Charles S. Barrett Building is a historic building in the Merion Village neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio. It was listed on the Columbus Register of Historic Properties in 2006 and the National Register of Historic Places in 2015. The building was completed in 1900 as the home of the city's South High School, part of the Columbus Public School District. It has since been converted into apartments, rented out as The Barrett. Columbus () is the state capital and the most populous city in the U.S. state of Ohio. David Riebel
David Riebel (August 7, 1855 – July 29, 1935) was a German-American architect in Columbus, Ohio. He was the head architect for the Columbus public school district from 1893 to 1922. In 1915, ''The Ohio Architect, Engineer and Builder'' considered his firm, David Riebel & Sons, to be the oldest and among the best architects in Columbus. Early life and career David Riebel was born on August 7, 1855 in Blenheim, Ontario. He was married in Bosanquet Township on November 3, 1875. At the time, he was described as a carpenter. With his wife, Margaret Ann Clemens, by 1895 he had four children: Laura, Elroy, Frederick, and Mary Edna. Riebel began practicing architecture around 1878. His first major commissions were in Forest, Ontario: its town hall (built 1883-84, demolished in 1982) and the Second Empire-style mansion of Dr. James Hutton (built in 1887 and demolished in 1935). Columbus, the state capital and Ohio's largest city, has numerous neighborhoods within its city limits. Neighborhood names and boundaries are not officially defined. They may vary or change from time to time due to demographic and economic variables. Columbus Register Of Historic Properties
The Columbus Register of Historic Properties is a register for historic buildings and other sites in Columbus, Ohio, United States. The register is maintained by the City of Columbus Historic Resources Commission and Historic Preservation Office, and was established in 1980. Many of these landmarks are also listed on the National Register of Historic Places, providing federal tax support for preservation, and some are further designated National Historic Landmarks, providing additional federal oversight. South High School is a public high school located on the south side of Columbus, Ohio. It was opened in 1900 as the fourth Columbus City Schools high school at 345 Deshler Avenue. The current building was opened March 31, 1924. The Charles S. Barrett Building at 345 E. Deshler Ave (named for that building's first principal in 1924 when it was reutilized as a junior high school) opened September 1900. Prior to that in 1895-1897 South High School utilized part of the Ohio Avenue Elementary School. In 1897 it was decided that the building was too far east for its name; the south side students were returned to the Central High School building at 6th & Broad Streets, and the building process began on the Deshler Street Building. Columbus Public School District
Columbus City Schools, formerly known as Columbus Public Schools, is the official school district for the city of Columbus, Ohio, and serves most of the city (portions of the city are served by suburban school districts). The district has 46,686 students enrolled, making it the largest school district in the state of Ohio as of June 2021. At its peak during the 1971 school year the district served 110,725 students. The first school built in the area which is now part of Columbus was a log cabin school-house built in Franklinton, in 1806. It wasn't until 1845 that the state of Ohio Legislature entrusted the management of Columbus schools to a Board of Education. Two years later the school board elected Dr. Asa Lord as the district's first superintendent. Dr. Gene T. Southwood Elementary School
Southwood Elementary School is a public elementary school in Columbus, Ohio, part of Columbus City Schools. The school building, located in the city's Merion Village neighborhood, was completed in 1894 and was designed by David Riebel. It was added to the Columbus Register of Historic Properties in 2002. The school opened on December 3, 1894. The first principal, Mary K. Esper, held the position from 1894 to 1923. The next principal, Elizabeth Jung, held the role from 1923 to 1930. During the 1995 school year, the school celebrated its 100-year anniversary with numerous events. In 2007, the building underwent renovations. During remodeling, workers removed chalkboards dating to the 1930s-1940s and uncovered chalkboards likely original to the building. A few had chalk murals, and the ''Columbus Dispatch'' reported at the time that they might be preserved as historical artifacts if the school district permitted it.
