Charles Rogers (collector)
Charles Rogers (2 August 1711– 2 January 1784) was an English customs official, known as an art collector. He also wrote on drawings, and became a Fellow of the Royal Society. Life Born on 2 August 1711, he was second surviving son of William and Isabella Rogers of Dean Street, Soho, London. In May 1731 he was placed in the custom house under William Townson, from whom he acquired a taste for the fine arts and book-collecting. Townson, the head in the Customs Office of the Certificate Office, collected books and prints. Townson left his estate to Rogers in 1740, a bequest which included a house at 3 Laurence Pountney Lane, London, containing a museum of art treasures. Here Rogers in 1746 took up residence. There were other houses left to him, one in Mark Lane, London, and the other in Richmond, Surrey. In 1747 he became clerk of the certificates. Charles Rogers (born July 5, 1987) is an American film director, screenwriter, producer and actor best known for his movie ''Fort Tilden'' and the TV series '' Search Party''. Career Rogers is a graduate of the New York University Tisch School of the Arts MFA film directing program. He was one of the filmmakers behind the multi-director feature film ''Black Dog, Red Dog'', produced by James Franco and Rabbit Bandini Productions, starring Logan Marshall-Green, Chloe Sevigny, and Whoopi Goldberg, which premiered at the 2015 International Film Festival of Guanajuato. The film was a class project at the NYU graduate film program, taught by Franco, wherein ten students adapted the poetry of Stephen Dobyns. In 2014 he co-wrote and co-directed ''Fort Tilden'' in collaboration with Sarah-Violet Bliss. Charles Edward "Buddy" Rogers (August 13, 1904 – April 21, 1999) was an American film actor and musician. During the peak of his popularity in the late 1920s and early 1930s he was publicized as "America's Boyfriend". Life and career Early years Rogers was born to Maude and Bert Henry Rogers in Olathe, Kansas. He studied at the University of Kansas where he became an active member of Phi Kappa Psi. In the mid-1920s he began acting professionally in Hollywood films. A talented trombonist skilled on several other musical instruments, Rogers performed with his own dance band in motion pictures and on radio. Charles Rogers (15 January 1887 – 20 December 1956) was an English film actor, director and screenwriter, best known for his association with Laurel and Hardy. He was born in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. In 1928, he joined the Laurel and Hardy crew on the Hal Roach lot, where he worked as actor, writer, and ultimately director. Although he was known informally as "Charley," he was always billed on screen under his given name, Charles Rogers. In the 1940s, as an actor, Rogers was teamed briefly with Harry Langdon in feature films, and with Andy Clyde for a few short comedies. In 1956, Rogers died in Los Angeles, California, following injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Charles Rogers (23 March 1823Published under Association of Cricket Historians and Statisticians. – 23 February 1887) was an English first-class cricketer. Rogers was born in 1823 at Cowley, Oxfordshire. He was the first member of his family to take up groundskeeping and cricket coaching, moving away from the family tradition of agricultural labouring. He made two appearances in first-class cricket, the first of which came for Manchester against Sussex at Eccles in 1858, followed by an appearance for the Marylebone Cricket Club against Middlesex at Lord's in 1861. In the second half of his life, he repeatedly ran into trouble for setting up publication societies from which he gained financial benefit. Life The only son of James Roger(s) (1767–1849), minister of Dunino in Fife, he was born in the manse there on 18 April 1825; His mother, who died at his birth, was Jane, second daughter of William Haldane, minister successively at Glenisla and Kingoldrum. Charles Frederick Rogers (December 30, 1921 disappeared June 23, 1965) was an American seismologist, pilot, and murder suspect who disappeared in June 1965 after police discovered the dismembered bodies of his elderly parents in the refrigerator of the Houston home all three shared, in what the media later dubbed "The Icebox Murders". Rogers has never been found and was declared dead ''in absentia'' in July 1975. He remains the only suspect in the murders, which are still considered unsolved. Background and education Charles Rogers enrolled at Texas A&M University in 1942, but later dropped out. He then enrolled at the University of Houston, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in nuclear physics.
