Charles Penrose (entertainer)
Charles Penrose (born Charles Penrose Dunbar Cawse; 11 November 1873 – 17 November 1952) was an English music hall and theatre performer, and later radio comedian, who is best known for his unusual comic song " The Laughing Policeman". He was born in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, the son of a master watchmaker and jeweller. Early life He initially followed his father into the jewellery trade, but enjoyed such success with his innovative laughing songs at local concert parties that he was invited to join a theatrical tour at the age of 18. His theatrical career took off, and he appeared in music hall and the West End. One of his most successful performances was in '' Tonight's the Night'' at the Gaiety Theatre, London in 1914–15. Penrose married architect's daughter Harriet Lewcock in 1899. "The Laughing Policeman" is a music hall song recorded by British artist Charles Penrose, published under the pseudonym Charles Jolly in 1922. It is an adaptation of "The Laughing Song" by American singer George W. Johnson with the same tune and form but different subject matter, first recorded in 1890. "The Laughing Song" In 1890, George W. Johnson started his recording career in the fledgling phonograph industry, and one of the songs he recorded was "The Laughing Song". The song features Johnson in the persona of a "dandy darky" who laughs in time to the music. Singing with laughter in time to the music has been heard in songs since "''L'éclat de rire''" or the "Laughing Song" in the 1856 opera ''Manon Lescaut'' by Daniel Auber, and Johnson's song showed clear influence from that tradition. ''To-Night's the Night'' is a musical comedy composed by Paul Rubens, with lyrics by Percy Greenbank and Rubens, and a book adapted by Fred Thompson. Two songs were composed by Jerome Kern. The story is based on the farce '' Les Dominos roses'' by Alfred Hennequin and Alfred Delacour. The musical was produced by George Grossmith, Jr. and Edward Laurillard and directed by Austen Hurgon. It opened at the Shubert Theatre in New York on December 24, 1914. It then was produced at the Gaiety Theatre in London, opening on April 18, 1915 and running for a very successful 460 performances. Grossmith starred in the piece with Leslie Henson. The Honeytraps was the 'girl band' featured in the 2006 reality TV show ''Boys Will Be Girls'', aired on E4. The programme starting by auditioning male singers (who'd all been in bands before) for a brand new band, to be managed by Olivier Behzadi - ex - Head of A&R Sony Music Intl and Nathan Moore, ex-lead singer of Brother Beyond. It was only once the final four had been selected that the twist was revealed. They were being given the task of trying to pass themselves off as a girl band. One of the four (Marvin Humes of former group VS, now JLS) backed out at this point and was not replaced. At the end of the series, the band recorded a cover version of the A Flock of Seagulls' track, "Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)", which was never released in the stores, but reached a respectable #23 on the UK Download Chart in May 2006. The Princess Beatrice Hospital was a London hospital located in Earl's Court, which operated from 1887 to 1978, latterly as a maternity hospital. History The hospital was founded in 1887 as part of the celebrations of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, and originally called the Queen's Jubilee Hospital. It was a small hospital of 14 beds, serving local people in need.
