Charles Orin Cunningham
Charles Orin Cunningham (October 24, 1872 – January 8, 1942) was a provincial politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1917 to 1921, sitting with the Conservative caucus in opposition. Political career Cunningham ran for a seat to the Alberta Legislature in the 1917 Alberta general election The 1917 Alberta general election was held on 7 June 1917 to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Ponoka was a provincial electoral district in Alberta, Canada, mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1905 to 1986. History Ponoka was one of the original 25 electoral districts contested in the 1905 Alberta general election upon Alberta joining Confederation in September 1905. The district was redrawn frequently over the years but had remained largely a thin slice in central Alberta. The electoral district was named for the Town of Ponoka in central Alberta. Ponoka was dissolved in the 1986 electoral district re-distribution to form the Ponoka-Rimbey electoral district. Percival Baker
Percival Baker (January 11, 1867 – July 19, 1921) was a farmer, church minister, and provincial politician in Alberta, Canada. He was elected as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta in the 1921 provincial election, however died the next day from injuries sustained weeks before. Early life Baker was born in York County, Ontario in 1867. He attended Kentucky University. After graduating from University he joined the ministry of the Baptist Church and served for many years. He moved to Alberta in 1908 and took up farming. Political career and death He ran as an Independent in the 1913 provincial election, and was defeated by Liberal incumbent William A. Campbell. Baker became heavily involved in the United Farmers of Alberta eventually becoming Vice President for the organization. The 1917 Alberta general election was held on 7 June 1917 to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. The Liberals won a fourth term in office, defeating the Conservative Party of Edward Michener. Because of World War I, eleven Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) were re-elected by acclamation, under Section 38 of the ''Election Act'', which stipulated that any member of the 3rd Alberta Legislative Assembly, would be guaranteed re-election, with no contest held, if members joined for war time service. Eleven MLAs were automatically re-elected through this clause. (None were re-elected in the next election.)
