Charles Morton (1855–1936) was a British racehorse trainer. He was Champion Trainer in 1908. Wantage
Wantage () is a historic market town and civil parish in Oxfordshire, England. Although within the boundaries of the historic county of Berkshire, it has been administered as part of the Vale of White Horse district of Oxfordshire since 1974. The town is on Letcombe Brook, south-west of Abingdon, north-west of Reading, south-west of Oxford and north-west of Newbury. It was the birthplace of King Alfred the Great in 849. History Wantage was a small Roman settlement but the origin of the toponym is somewhat uncertain. It is generally thought to be from an Old English phrase meaning "decreasing river". King Alfred the Great was born at the royal palace there in the 9th century, in what was originally known as Wanating. Wantage appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. Jack Barnato Joel
Isaac "Jack" Barnato Joel (29 September 1862 – 13 November 1940) was a South African mining magnate and a champion horse breeder. Early life Isaac Barnato Joel was born on 29 September 1862 into a Jewish family, being one of three sons of Joel Joel (1836/7–1893), a London tavernkeeper of the ''King of Prussia'', and Catherine "Kate" Isaacs (1840–1917). Catherine's brother was Barnet Isaacs, later known as Barney Barnato (1851–1897). Along with his brothers Solomon Joel and Woolf Joel, he was taken under the wing of Barney Barnato and made a fortune from the Barnato Diamond Mining Company. Career Joel was accused of Illicit Diamond Buying "IDB" in South Africa under the 1882 Diamond Trade Act violation, but Cecil Rhodes was able to get him released so he could return to London. Sunstar (racehorse)
Sunstar (1908–1926) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a career which lasted from June 1910 to May 1911 he ran nine times and won six races. He won the 2000 Guineas Stakes and followed with a win in The Derby. Background Sunstar was a medium-sized dark bay or brown horse bred by his owner Jack Joel. He was sired by Sundridge out of a mare named Doris. Sundridge had been a specialist sprinter, excelling over five and six furlongs which led some commentators to doubt his son's ability to stay middle distances. Sundridge had not made an impressive start to his stud career and had been sold to a French breeding syndicate in September 1910, before Sunstar's achievements made his potential evident. He was the Champion sire in 1911, and sired many other good winners, although most of them did better over shorter distances. Humorist (horse)
Humorist (1918–1921) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse. He was a leading two-year-old in 1920 and finished third in the 1921 2000 Guineas before winning the Derby at Epsom. Less than three weeks after the Derby, Humorist died in his stable from a lung haemorrhage caused by a tubercular condition. Background Humorist was a "beautiful, rather delicate" chestnut colt with a broad white blaze and a “kind and intelligent” temperament. He was bred by his owner Jack Joel, who sent him to his private trainer Charles Morton at Letcombe Bassett in Berkshire. Humorist's sire, Polymelus, was a good racehorse who won the Champion Stakes in 1906, but went on to much greater success as a stallion.
