Charles Mordaunt, 3rd Earl Of Peterborough
Charles Mordaunt, 3rd Earl of Peterborough and 1st Earl of Monmouth, (1658 – 25 October 1735) was an English nobleman and military leader. He was the son of John Mordaunt, 1st Viscount Mordaunt, and his wife Elizabeth, the daughter and sole heiress of Thomas Carey, the second son of Robert Carey, 1st Earl of Monmouth. Mordaunt's father, John Mordaunt, was created Viscount Mordaunt of Avalon and Baron Mordaunt of Reigate, Surrey, in 1659. Political career Charles attended Tonbridge School, then later matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford, on 11 April 1674. When about sixteen years of age he joined Sir John Narborough's fleet in the Mediterranean, and won his first distinction in arms in the destruction of the dey's fleet under the guns of Tripoli. His father died on 5 June 1675, and Charles Mordaunt succeeded to the peerage as Viscount Mordaunt. Charles Mordaunt, 4th Earl of Peterborough, 2nd Earl of Monmouth (1708 – 1 August 1779) was a British peer and Member of Parliament, styled Viscount Mordaunt from 1710 to 1735. He was the son of John Mordaunt, Viscount Mordaunt and Lady Frances Powlett, and succeeded his grandfather, Charles Mordaunt, 3rd Earl of Peterborough in the earldom Earl () is a rank of the nobility in the United Kingdom. Sir Charles Mordaunt, 6th Baronet (c.1697 – 11 March 1778), of Walton, Warwickshire, Walton d'Eiville in Warwickshire, was an English landowner and British Tory Party, Tory politician who sat in the British House of Commons, House of Commons for 40 years from 1734 to 1774. Mordaunt was the eldest son of Sir John Mordaunt, 5th Baronet, of Walton D’Eiville and Little Massingham and his second wife Penelope Warburton, daughter of Sir George Warburton, 1st Baronet, of Arley, Cheshire. He matriculated at New College, Oxford 8 June 1714, aged 16 and Lincoln's Inn on 21 May 1718. Mordaunt married Dorothy Conyers daughter of John Conyers (1650-1725), John Conyers of Walthamstow on 1 December 1720. He succeeded to the Mordaunt baronets, baronetcy on 6 September 1721.
