1865 United Kingdom General Election
The 1865 United Kingdom general election saw the Liberals, led by Lord Palmerston, increase their large majority over the Earl of Derby's Conservatives to 80. The Whig Party changed its name to the Liberal Party between the previous election and this one. Palmerston died in October the same year and was succeeded by Lord John Russell as Prime Minister. Despite the Liberal majority, the party was divided by the issue of further parliamentary reform, and Russell resigned after being defeated in a vote in the House of Commons in 1866, leading to minority Conservative governments under Derby and then Benjamin Disraeli. This was the last United Kingdom general election until 2019 where a party increased its majority after having been returned to office at the previous election with a reduced majority. Corruption The 1865 general election was regarded by contemporaries as being a generally dull contest nationally, which exaggerated the degree of corruption within individual consti ... Charles William White
Charles William White (9 September 1838 – 15 October 1890) was an Irish Member of Parliament (MP) in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. He was elected as one of the two MPs for County Tipperary at a by-election in 1866 following the death of the sitting MP John Blake Dillon, who had been one of the founding members of the Young Ireland movement. He was re-elected at the 1868 and 1874 general elections, but resigned from Parliament on 6 February 1875. He gave no explanation for his resignation, although it was speculated at the time that his support for the Home Rule campaign was 'very reluctant' and his 'heart was not in the cause', and that at the same time he had been advised that his advocacy of Home Rule was inconsistent with his position as an officer in the British Army.OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. Waldron first stood for Parliament as a Whig at a by-election in Tipperary, caused by the expulsion of James Sadleir from the House of Commons. Unsuccessful on this occasion, he was elected as a Whig for the same seat just a month later at the 1857 general election, holding the seat — standing as a Liberal in 1859 — until he stood down in 1865. Parliament Of The United Kingdom
The Parliament of the United Kingdom is the supreme legislative body of the United Kingdom, the Crown Dependencies and the British Overseas Territories. It meets at the Palace of Westminster, London. It alone possesses legislative supremacy and thereby ultimate power over all other political bodies in the UK and the overseas territories. Parliament is bicameral but has three parts, consisting of the sovereign ( King-in-Parliament), the House of Lords, and the House of Commons (the primary chamber). In theory, power is officially vested in the King-in-Parliament. However, the Crown normally acts on the advice of the prime minister, and the powers of the House of Lords are limited to only delaying legislation; thus power is ''de facto'' vested in the House of Commons. The House of Commons is an elected chamber with elections to 650 single-member constituencies held at least every five years under the first-past-the-post system. By constitutional convention, all governme ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Member Of Parliament (United Kingdom)
In the United Kingdom, a member of Parliament (MP) is an individual elected to serve in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Electoral system All 650 members of the UK House of Commons are elected using the first-past-the-post voting system in single member constituencies across the whole of the United Kingdom, where each constituency has its own single representative. Elections All MP positions become simultaneously vacant for elections held on a five-year cycle, or when a snap election is called. The Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011 set out that ordinary general elections are held on the first Thursday in May, every five years. The Act was repealed in 2022. With approval from Parliament, both the 2017 and 2019 general elections were held earlier than the schedule set by the Act. If a vacancy arises at another time, due to death or resignation, then a constituency vacancy may be filled by a by-election. Under the Representation of the People Act 198 ...
