Charles Merrill (businessman)
Charles Merrill (January 3, 1792 – December 28, 1872) was an American entrepreneur who owned mercantile, construction, real estate, and lumber companies in Maine, Virginia, and Michigan. Early life Charles Merrill was born in Falmouth, Maine, on January 3, 1792. He was the seventh of the children of General James Merrill - who was of the principal citizens of Falmouth. Merrill spent his earlier years on his father's farm and obtained an education attending the common school during the winter. Early business career When he became of age, he moved to nearby Portland, Maine, and in partnership with his brother and a Mr. Scott engaged in mercantile business under the firm of S & C Merrill & Company. The business proved unsuccessful and heavy debts were incurred. Once the firm was dissolved, Merrill moved to Virginia, where he took a subcontract on a railroad leading from Petersburg, which was then in progress of construction. Charles Merton Merrill (December 11, 1907 – March 29, 1996) was a United States circuit judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Education and career Born in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii, Merrill received an Artium Baccalaureus degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 1928 and a Bachelor of Laws from Harvard Law School in 1931. He was in private practice in Reno, Nevada from 1931 to 1950. He became a justice of the Nevada Supreme Court from 1951 to 1959, serving as chief justice from 1955 to 1956, and in 1959. Federal judicial service On August 27, 1959, Merrill was nominated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to a seat on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit vacated by Judge William Healy. Merrill was confirmed by the United States Senate on September 14, 1959, and received his commission on September 21, 1959. Charles Washington Merrill (December 21, 1869 – February 5, 1958) was an American mining metallurgist. Biography He was born in Concord, New Hampshire to Sylvester and Clara L. (née French) Merrill. He attended elementary and high school in Alameda, California and then attended the College of Mining of the University of California, where he received a Bachelor of Science in 1891. After his graduation he was first connected with the noted old Standard Consolidated mine in Bodie, California, and from there went to the Harqua Hala mine in Arizona, thence to the Montana Mining Company in Marysville, California. In 1899, he became affiliated with the widely known Homestake Mining Company of South Dakota as a metallurgist, and in this capacity he manifested the brilliant talents which became the foundation of his future career.
