Charles Langlois (politician)
Charles A. Langlois (born 22 March 1938) was a member of the House of Commons of Canada from 1988 to 1993. His background was in administration. Langlois was born in Sainte-Marthe-de-Gaspé, Quebec and was educated at Collège Notre-Dame-des-Champs. He was elected in the 1988 federal election at the Manicouagan electoral district for the Progressive Conservative Party. He succeeded Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, who ran and was elected in the Charlevoix riding instead. Langlois held membership in the provincial Quebec Liberal Party at the time, but encouraged federal voters in Quebec to "elect a member on the government side" namely the Progressive Conservatives under Mulroney. Manicouagan (electoral District)
Manicouagan is a federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada, that has been represented in the House of Commons of Canada since 1968. The riding was created in 1966 from parts of Charlevoix and Saguenay ridings. The neighbouring ridings are Abitibi—Baie-James—Nunavik—Eeyou, Chicoutimi—Le Fjord, Montmorency—Charlevoix—Haute-Côte-Nord, Haute-Gaspésie—La Mitis—Matane—Matapédia, Gaspésie—Îles-de-la-Madeleine and Labrador. Charlevoix (electoral District)
Charlevoix was a federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1917 and from 1949 to 2004. The district was created in the British North America Act of 1867. It was abolished in 1914 when it was merged into Charlevoix—Montmorency. The district was created again in 1947 from Charlevoix—Saguenay. It was abolished again in 2003 when it was redistributed into Charlevoix—Montmorency and Manicouagan ridings. The best-known person to represent this riding is Brian Mulroney who was Member of Parliament for the riding, for part of his term as Prime Minister of Canada, from 1988 to 1993. The 1993 Canadian federal election was held on October 25, 1993, to elect members to the House of Commons of the 35th Parliament of Canada. Considered to be a major political realignment, it was one of the most eventful elections in Canada's history. Two new regionalist parties emerged and the election marked the worst defeat for a governing party at the federal level. Brian Mulroney
Martin Brian Mulroney ( ; born March 20, 1939) is a Canadian lawyer, businessman, and politician who served as the 18th prime minister of Canada from 1984 to 1993. Born in the eastern Quebec city of Baie-Comeau, Mulroney studied political science and law. He then moved to Montreal and gained prominence as a labour lawyer. After placing third in the 1976 Progressive Conservative leadership election, he was appointed president of the Iron Ore Company of Canada in 1977. He held that post until 1983, when he successfully became leader of the Progressive Conservatives. He then led the party to a landslide victory in the 1984 federal election, winning the second-largest percentage of seats in Canadian history (at 74.8 percent) and receiving over 50 percent of the popular vote.
