Charles Jeanneret (politician)
Charles Edward Jeanneret (9 February 1834 – 23 August 1898) was an Australian businessman and politician. He was born in Sydney to dentist Henry Jeanneret and Harriet Merrett. As a boy he was sent to Flinders Island to learn navigation and seamanship, and after a trip to Europe and three years at the goldfields, he settled in Sydney around 1857. On 12 June 1857 he married Julia Bellingham, with whom he would have ten children. He worked for the Bank of New South Wales and lived at Hunters Hill, becoming a well-known local businessman, especially in the steam boat and ferry companies. He formed the Parramatta River Steam Company in 1865 which would become the major ferry operator on the river. In 1843, he created a tramway that linked the second Parramatta wharf (Redbank Wharf, near Duck River) with the centre of Parramatta. Carcoar was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales, originally created in 1859 to the southwest of Bathurst and named after Carcoar. It replaced part of Western Boroughs and part of Bathurst (County). From 1880 to 1894, it elected two members. Denis Donnelly
Denis Cornelius Joseph Donnelly (1833 – 14 March 1896) was an Irish-born Australian politician. Born at Cork to Cornelius Donnelly and Mary O'Leary, he worked as a miner and a merchant before arriving in Western Australia in 1850. In 1854 he followed the gold rush to Ballarat, and in 1862 moved to Forbes. Although he established a mine at Lucknow, he soon sold it and instead became a flour miller at Peel near Bathurst. On 16 January 1866 he married Ellen Agatha Cummins, with whom he had thirteen children. From around 1878 he kept a store at Cowra. He was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the Protectionist member for Carcoar at the 1891 election. Richmond River
The Richmond River is a river situated in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Australia. Course and features The river rises at the northern end of the Richmond Range, near its junction with the McPherson Range, on the Queensland/ New South Wales border, west of Mount Lindesay, and flows generally south east and north east, joined by twelve tributaries, including the Wilsons River, before reaching its mouth at its confluence with the Coral Sea of the South Pacific Ocean near Ballina; descending over its course. The 1894 New South Wales colonial election was for 125 electoral districts, with each district returning one member. The election was conducted on the basis of a simple majority or first-past-the-post voting system. There were three significant changes from the 1891 election, the abolition of multi-member constituencies, the abolition of plural voting where an elector had property or residence in more than one electorate and that polls for every district were held on the same day. The number of seats was reduced from 141 to 125. In this election, in 74 electorates the winning candidate received less than 50% of the votes, while 1 was uncontested. Cowra was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales from 1894 to 1904, including the town of Cowra. History Prior to 1894 the town of Cowra was part of the district of Carcoar which returned two members. Multi-member constituencies were abolished in the 1893 redistribution, resulting in the creation of 76 new districts, including Cowra. Carcoar was abolished and the eastern part was given to West Macquarie and the western part to the new district of Cowra, along with the south-western part of Orange. The electoral district included parts of the counties of Bathurst and Forbes. At its establishment in 1894 Cowra had 1,903 enrolled voters, slightly less than the average of 2,046.
