Charles J. Owens
Sir Charles John Owens, CB (26 September 1845 – 17 January 1933) was a British railway manager. Entering the service of the London and South Western Railway when he was 17, he rose to be its general manager from 1898 to 1912, and a director from 1912 to 1923. From 1923 to 1930 he was a director of the Southern Railway. Owens was a member of the Commission of Lieutenancy of the City of London, a member of the Royal Commission on Imperial Free Trade, and the chairman of the British and Foreign Bible Society. Rail transport (also known as train transport) is a means of transport that transfers passengers and goods on wheeled vehicles running on rails, which are incorporated in tracks. In contrast to road transport, where the vehicles run on a prepared flat surface, rail vehicles (rolling stock) are directionally guided by the tracks on which they run. Tracks usually consist of steel rails, installed on sleepers (ties) set in ballast, on which the rolling stock, usually fitted with metal wheels, moves. Other variations are also possible, such as "slab track", in which the rails are fastened to a concrete foundation resting on a prepared subsurface.
