Charles Howard (Detroit)
Charles Howard (August 7, 1804 – November 6, 1883) was mayor of Detroit in 1849. Biography Charles Howard was born August 7, 1804, in Chenango County, New York. His family moved to Port Jervis, New York; when Charles Howard was an adult he moved to Sackets Harbor, New York and worked as a schooner captain. He later joined the firm of Alvin Bronson and Company (later Bronson, Crocker, and Company) as a shipping and forwarding commission merchant, and moved to Oswego, New York, to represent to firm. In 1834 he married Margaret Vosburg. The couple had two children: Mrs. William J. Waterman and well-known dramatist Bronson Howard. In 1840, Howard came to Detroit, now a partner in the shipping firm of Bronson, Crocker, and Howard, to establish an agency for the firm. In 1848, he entered a partnership with N. P. Frederick Buhl
Frederick Buhl (November 27, 1806 – May 12, 1890) was a businessman from Detroit, Michigan. He served as the city's mayor in 1848. Biography Frederick Buhl was born in Zelienople, Pennsylvania on November 27, 1806, the second of eleven children. He went to Pittsburgh at the age of 16 to learn to be a jeweler, but ill-health forced him to change plans, and in 1833 he moved to Detroit. There, he formed a partnership with his brother Christian H. Buhl, a trained hatter. The brothers began selling hats, but soon branched out into furs, establishing a large and successful company under the name of the F & C H Buhl Co. They remained in business together for 20 years, after which Christian retired from the trade and Frederick Buhl continued in business independently under the name F. Buhl and Company. John Ladue
John Ladue (November 18, 1804 – December 1, 1854) was mayor of Detroit, Michigan in 1850. Biography John Ladue was born November, 1804 in Lansingburgh, New York Lansingburgh was a village in the north end of Troy. Port Jervis is a city located at the confluence of the Neversink and Delaware rivers in western Orange County, New York, United States, north of the Delaware Water Gap. Its population was 8,775 at the 2020 census. The communities of Deerpark, Huguenot, Sparrowbush, and Greenville are adjacent to Port Jervis. Sackets Harbor, New York
Sackets Harbor (earlier spelled Sacketts Harbor) is a village in Jefferson County, New York, United States, on Lake Ontario. The population was 1,450 at the 2010 census. The village was named after land developer and owner Augustus Sackett, who founded it in the early 1800s. Sackets Harbor is in the western part of the town of Hounsfield and is west of Watertown. The heart of the village, with a Main Street and well-preserved 19th century buildings, has been recognized as the Sackets Harbor Village Historic District and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. To support the War of 1812, the US Navy built a major shipyard and its headquarters for the Great Lakes at the village. Within a short period, more than 3,000 men worked at the shipyard. A schooner () is a type of sailing vessel defined by its rig: fore-and-aft rigged on all of two or more masts and, in the case of a two-masted schooner, the foremast generally being shorter than the mainmast. A common variant, the topsail schooner also has a square topsail on the foremast, to which may be added a topgallant. Differing definitions leave uncertain whether the addition of a fore course would make such a vessel a brigantine. Bronson Howard
Bronson Crocker Howard (October 7, 1842 – August 4, 1908) was an American dramatist. Biography Howard was born in Detroit where his father Charles Howard was Mayor in 1849. He prepared for college at New Haven, Conn., but instead of entering Yale he turned to Journalism in New York. From 1867 to 1872 he worked on several newspapers, among them the ''Evening Mail'' and the ''Tribune''. As early as 1864 he had written a dramatic piece (''Fantine'') which was played in Detroit. His first important play was '' Saratoga'', produced by Augustin Daly in 1870. It was very successful and became the first of a long series of pieces which gave Mr. Howard a foremost position among American playwrights. He married a sister of Sir Charles Wyndham, the English actor, and he had homes in New Rochelle, New York and London, England where some of his plays were no less popular than in America. The Panic of 1857 was a financial panic in the United States caused by the declining international economy and over-expansion of the domestic economy. Because of the invention of the telegraph by Samuel F. Morse in 1844, the Panic of 1857 was the first financial crisis to spread rapidly throughout the United States. The world economy was also more interconnected by the 1850s, which also made the Panic of 1857 the first worldwide economic crisis. In Britain, the Palmerston government circumvented the requirements of the Bank Charter Act 1844, which required gold and silver reserves to back up the amount of money in circulation. Surfacing news of this circumvention set off the Panic in Britain. Beginning in September 1857, the financial downturn did not last long, but a proper recovery was not seen until the onset of the American Civil War in 1861.
