Charles Hope, 1st Earl of Hopetoun Order of the Thistle, KT Privy Council, PC (1681 – 26 February 1742) was a Scotland, Scottish nobleman. Early life He was the son of John Hope of Hopetoun by a daughter of the John Hamilton, 4th Earl of Haddington, 4th Earl of Haddington. His father, John Hope, purchased the Scottish feudal barony, barony of Niddry Castle from George Seton, 4th Earl of Winton around 1680. He also bought the neighbouring barony of Abercorn, with the office of Sheriff of Clackmannan#Sheriff of Linlithgow, heritable sheriff of the County of Linlithgow, from Sir Walter Seton. His paternal grandfather was James Hope of Hopetoun, Sir James Hope of Hopetoun and paternal great-grandfather was Sir Thomas Hope, 1st Baronet of Craighall, Fife. Charles Hope-Weir
The Hon. Charles Hope-Weir (or Hope-Vere) (8 May 1710 – 30 December 1791) was a Scottish politician. Life Born The Hon. Charles Hope, he was the second son of Charles Hope, 1st Earl of Hopetoun and Lady Henrietta Johnstone, daughter of William Johnstone, 1st Marquess of Annandale. In 1730 he inherited the Craigiehall estate, in the parish of Dalmeny, West Lothian, from his uncle, the 2nd Marquess of Annandale. He adopted the name Hope-Weir, and the arms of the Weir family, on his marriage in 1733 to Catherine Weir, daughter and heiress of the Weir Baronets of Blackwood, Lanarkshire. The family name was later changed to Hope-Vere. On 13 May 1743 he was elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Linlithgowshire, a seat he held until 1769, when he stepped down. He was appointed Governor of Blackness Castle in 1744. Charles Hope, Lord Granton
Rt Hon Lord Charles Hope FRSE (29 June 1763 – 30 October 1851) was a Scottish politician and judge. Life Hope was born on 29 June 1763, the eldest son of Mary Breton, the only daughter of Eliab Breton of Forty Hill, Enfield (a granddaughter of Sir William Wolstenholme) and John Hope, Member of Parliament (MP) for Linlithgowshire, and a grandson of Charles Hope, 1st Earl of Hopetoun. He was educated at Enfield Grammar School, and later at the Edinburgh High School, where in 1777 he was the Latin dux. After studying law at the University of Edinburgh he was admitted as an advocate on 11 December 1784, and on 25 March 1786 was appointed a Deputy Advocate. In 1788 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His proposers were Allan Maconochie, Lord Meadowbank, James Gregory, and the mathematician John Playfair. Charles Hope (11 September 1808 – 31 October 1893), styled The Honourable from 1823, was a Scottish Conservative Party politician. Early life and education Hope was born on the 11 September 1808, the third son of Louisa Wedderburn''The Manx Sun'' Saturday, 4 November 1893 Page: 13 and John Hope, 4th Earl of Hopetoun. His brother was John Hope, 5th Earl of Hopetoun. In 1841 he married Lady Isabella-Helen Douglas, eldest daughter of Thomas Douglas, 5th Earl of Selkirk. Educated at the University of Edinburgh, he was called to the Scottish Bar in 1831, and later to the English Bar. Career Hope was appointed one of the Commissioners of the Greenwich Hospital in 1841. He was Member of Parliament (MP) for Linlithgowshire from 1838 until 1845. Charles Hope, 3rd Marquess Of Linlithgow
Charles William Frederick Hope, 3rd Marquess of Linlithgow MC (7 April 1912 – 7 April 1987) was a British peer and businessman. Early years The son of Victor Hope, 2nd Marquess of Linlithgow. He was the elder twin brother of John Hope, 1st Baron Glendevon. His first wife, Vivien Kenyon-Slaney, daughter of Major Robert Orlando Rodolph Kenyon-Slaney, died on 23 September 1963. He later married Judith Lawson, daughter of Stanley Matthew Lawson, in 1965. He was educated at Ludgrove School and Eton College. Lord Hope fought in WWII and received the Military Cross for his service. He was a member of the 51st (Highland) Division. In 1940, he was taken prisoner at Dunkirk and held at Colditz Castle. After the war Lord Hope went into finance and was a director of Eagle Star Insurance. In 1974, Lord Hope created The Hopetoun House Preservation Trust to ensure Hopetoun House and the estate were preserved for future generations.
