Charles Henry Dorsey Jr.
Charles Henry Dorsey, Jr. (May 18, 1930 - April 21, 1995) was born in Baltimore and attended St. Catherine Academy in Baltimore and Epiphany College, a Josephite seminary, in New York from 1947–48. He transferred from Epiphany College to Loyola College in September 1949. He was the first black undergraduate student to enroll in Loyola College (now Loyola University Maryland). Integration at Loyola The topic of integrating Loyola College came up in 1946 under the college's President Bunn. However, he was fearful that “‘the faculty and alumni would violently oppose black students’” who attended regular undergraduate classes. Even though black students were able to attend night classes during World War II, Dorsey was the first black student trying to enroll as a full time undergraduate. Loyola University Maryland is a private Jesuit university in Baltimore, Maryland. Josephite Fathers
The Society of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart ( la, Societas Sodalium Sancti Joseph a Sacra Corde) abbreviated SSJ, also known as the Josephites is a society of apostolic Life of Pontifical Right for men (priests and brothers) headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland. They work specifically among African Americans. They were formed in 1893 by a group of Mill Hill priests working with newly-freed Black people emancipated during the American Civil War. The founders included Fr John R. Slattery, who led the group and would become the first Josephite superior general, and one of the nation's first black priests, Fr. Charles Uncles. With permission from the Mill Hill leaders as well as Archbishop of Baltimore Cardinal Gibbons, the group established the Josephites as a mission society independent from Mill Hill, based in America, and dedicated totally to the African-American cause. The Sidney Hollander Award is an award for work towards obtaining equal rights for African Americans, given by the Sidney Hollander Foundation, in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, and named in honor of Sidney Hollander. The Sidney Hollander Foundation In December 1941, a foundation was set up in order to honor Sidney Hollander. Hollander was an influential humanitarian living in Baltimore, Maryland during the mid-20th century. Being a humanitarian, Hollander was an avid believer that all people should be afforded justice, civil rights, and equal opportunity for education, employment and housing.
