Charles Harrington Elster (born 1957, New York City) is an American writer, broadcaster, and logophile. In 1998, he cofounded and cohosted the weekly public radio show ''A Way with Words ''A Way with Words'' is an American weekly public radio program discussing the use of language (mainly American and Canadian English, with other languages earning more occasional mention) in everyday life, along with linguistics, lexicology and ...,'' which he resigned from in 2004 after a dispute with management. Logophile
The Greek root "-Phil-" originates from the Greek word meaning "love". For example, Philosophy (along with the Greek root "-soph-" meaning "wisdom") is the study of human customs and the significance of life. One of the most common uses of the root "-phil-" is with philias. A philia is the love or obsession with a particular thing or subject. The suffix -philia is used to specify the love or obsession with something more specific. It is somewhat antonymic to -phobia. Philias can be biological (e. g. Rhizophilia, preference for living on roots), or Chemical (e. g. Chromophilous, materials that stain easily), or can be a hobby/liking (e. g. Icthyophilia, love for fish). ''A Way with Words'' is an American weekly public radio program discussing the use of language (mainly American and Canadian English, with other languages earning more occasional mention) in everyday life, along with linguistics, lexicology and folk etymology from a pool of listener questions from weekly callers into the program, along with a weekly word game with quiz expert and comedian John Chaneski. The program is distributed mainly for weekend airing across member stations of NPR, utilizing the Public Radio Exchange for program distribution. That week's program is then distributed weekly as a podcast on Mondays. Background It was produced by KPBS-FM in San Diego from 1998 to 2007 and has since then been produced by Wayword, Inc. The show was originally hosted by authors Richard Lederer and Charles Harrington Elster. After five and a half years, Elster left the show and was replaced by journalist and writer Martha Barnette.
