Sir Charles Hanson, 1st Baronet
Sir Charles Augustin Hanson, 1st Baronet (1846 – 17 January 1922) of Fowey was a British politician and 590th Lord Mayor of London. He was born in Cornwall to master mariner Joseph Hanson and Mary Ann Hicks and was educated at Fowey School. He emigrated to Canada, where he made his fortune in the lumber business and returned to Cornwall c.1890. Whilst in Canada he married Martha Sabine Applebe, a wealthy Canadian heiress, with whom he had a son and a daughter. On his return he bought a tract of land in Cornwall and built Fowey Hall in 1899. However he spent much of his time in London as a stockbroker. He was pricked High Sheriff of Cornwall for 1907–08. In 1908 he was awarded the Cross of Knight of the Order of Francis Joseph, which was conferred on him by the Emperor of Austria for services rendered. Sir Charles Edwin Bourne Hanson, 2nd Baronet (1874-1958) was British Army officer and stockbroker who was High Sheriff of Cornwall in 1936. His father was Sir Charles Augustin Hanson, who was Lord Mayor of London in 1917-18. Hanson was an officer in the 3rd The Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment), a (Militia) Battalion stationed in Halifax, Yorkshire. The battalion was embodied for service in January 1900 during the Second Boer War,Hart′s Army list, 1901 and Hanson left to join the fight in South Africa on the ''SS Bavarian'' two months later. He was promoted to major on 16 August 1900. Charles Hanson (born May 1978) is an auctioneer, chartered surveyor and television personality. He is best known for his appearances as an antiques expert on the television programmes ''Bargain Hunt'', ''Flog It!'' and ''Antiques Road Trip''. Career Business After gaining his MRICS qualification, Hanson started his career in 1999 at Christie's as a valuer in the European Ceramics and Glass Department. Subsequently, he worked for antique houses in Cheshire and Staffordshire before founding Hansons Auctioneers and Valuers in Etwall, Derbyshire in August 2005. In 2016 his company opened a department specialising in coins and antiquities, named Historica.
