James Daly (August 15, 1844 County Westmeath, Ireland – March 20, 1892 New York City) was an American merchant and politician from New York. Life He attended Queen's College, in Galway. Then he emigrated to New York City, and became a merchant and broker. He entered politics joining the Democratic Reform movement against the Tweed Ring. Daly was a member of the New York State Assembly (New York Co., 14th D.) in 1874, 1875 and 1878. He was a member of the New York State Senate (7th D.) from 1882 to 1887, sitting in the 105th, 106th, 107th, 108th, 109th and 110th New York State Legislatures. Sir John Alexander Macdonald (January 10 or 11, 1815 – June 6, 1891) was the first prime minister of Canada, serving from 1867 to 1873 and from 1878 to 1891. The dominant figure of Canadian Confederation, he had a political career that spanned almost half a century. Macdonald was born in Scotland; when he was a boy his family immigrated to Kingston in the Province of Upper Canada (today in eastern Ontario). As a lawyer, he was involved in several high-profile cases and quickly became prominent in Kingston, which elected him in 1844 to the legislature of the Province of Canada. Michael Norton (December 25, 1837 in County Roscommon, Ireland – April 23, 1889 in New York City) was an American politician from New York. Life The family emigrated to New York City when Michael was still an infant. he began to work when eight years old, first in a crockery factory, then in a sugar refinery. At age 16, he became a mess boy aboard the steamer ''Atlantic'' of the Collins Line. After six trips across the Atlantic Ocean, he abandoned the maritime service, and became a cooper instead. He fought in the American Civil War as a captain of volunteers from May to November 1861, when he resigned his commission to take care of the family after his father's death. He was an Alderman of New York (3rd D.) from 1865 to 1870. He was a Democratic member of the New York State Senate (5th D.) from 1868 to 1871, sitting in the 91st, 92nd, 93rd and 94th New York State Legislatures.
