Charles F. Nelson
Charles Franklyn Nelson (March 11, 1872 – November 1, 1940) was a Canadian politician. He served in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1917 to 1920 as a Liberal member for the constituency of Slocan. He won his seat in the assembly by defeating incumbent William Hunter in the 1916 British Columbia general election The 1916 British Columbia general election was the fourteenth general election for the Province of British Columbia, Canada. Hastings, Ontario
Hastings is a community within the municipality of Trent Hills, Northumberland County, in the province of Ontario, Canada. It is situated on the Trent-Severn Waterway and the Trans Canada Trail in what is considered to be Ontario's "cottage country". It can be reached from Highway 401 by exiting at exit 474 at Cobourg and going north on County Road 45. It can be reached from Highway 7 at the Norwood exit going south (also on County Road 45). Hastings had a population of 1,208 at the 2001 Census. It is known as "The Hub of the Trent" as Hastings is directly on the Trent River and serves as a major centre for tourists, boaters, and fishermen. New Denver, British Columbia
New Denver is at the mouth of Carpenter Creek, on the east shore of Slocan Lake, in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia. The village is west of Kaslo on Highway 31A, and southeast of Nakusp and northeast of Slocan on Highway 6. Name origin In 1892, the town was mostly called Slocan City or Slocan for about a month, Eldorado City or Eldorado for about seven months, and New Denver since. However, these names were used interchangeably for months. Furthermore, the place may have been known as Carpenter Creek townsite after its founding in 1891. Appearing about the same time as the Slocan community at the foot of the lake, it is unclear why the latter prevailed in keeping the name. Slocan (electoral District)
Slocan was a provincial electoral district in the Canadian province of British Columbia. It made its first appearance in the election of 1903 and its last in the general election of 1920. William Hunter (Canadian Politician)
William Hunter (September 28, 1858 – March 8, 1939) was a businessman and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Slocan from 1907 to 1916 and from 1920 to 1924 in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia as a Conservative. He was born in Hemmingford, Quebec in 1858, the son of William Hunter and Janet Mackay, and was educated on Prince Edward Island. In 1884, Hunter came to British Columbia, where he was employed in railway construction for two years. He then worked at bridge building in Washington state until 1889, when he moved to Nelson. Hunter was involved in mining for a year. He next built the International Hotel in Nelson, selling the hotel after operating it for five months. He then operated as a general merchant in New Denver. In 1891, he moved to the future site of the town of Silverton and built a steamship to operate on Slocan Lake. Two years later, he opened a store in Silverton. 1916 British Columbia General Election
The 1916 British Columbia general election was the fourteenth general election for the Province of British Columbia, Canada. It was held to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. The election was called on July 5, 1916, and held on September 14, 1916. The new legislature met for the first time on March 1, 1917. The Liberal Party defeated the governing Conservative Party, winning 50% of the vote, almost double its share from the previous election. The Liberals won 36 of the 47 seats in the legislature. The Conservatives' popular vote fell from almost 60% to just over 40%, and took nine seats, forming the Official Opposition. Two other seats were won by independents. Unlike in the previous BC general election, in 1916 of the 47 MLAs 37 were elected in single member districts.
