Charles Eden (politician)
Charles Eden (1673 – 26 March 1722) was a British colonial official who served as the second Governor of the Province of North Carolina from 1714 until his death in 1722. Governor of North Carolina Eden was appointed Governor of North Carolina on 28 May 1714. He is best known for his connections with various locally based pirates. Gentleman pirate Stede Bonnet and the notorious Blackbeard (Edward Teach) surrendered to Governor Eden and received the King's Pardon upon promising to change their ways. Both, however, would eventually return to piracy. In 1719 prominent North Carolinian Edward Moseley accused Governor Eden of profiting from Blackbeard's crimes. Moseley was arrested and fined for his accusations. Eden's secretary of the governor's council, Tobias Knight, was implicated when a letter written to Teach was found on the pirate's body at his death and by the fact that the cargo taken from a ship captured by Teach was housed in Knight's barn. Charles Eden (Royal Navy Officer)
Admiral Sir Charles Eden, (3 July 1808 – 7 March 1878) was a Royal Navy officer who went on to be Second Naval Lord. Naval career Born the fifth son of Sir Frederick Eden, Eden joined the Royal Navy in 1821. He was given command of the fourth-rate HMS ''Winchester'' in 1842 and the flagship HMS ''Victory'' in 1847. From 1848 to 1852 he acted as Private Secretary to George Eden, 1st Earl of Auckland and Sir Francis Baring, 3rd Baronet, successively First Lords of the Admiralty. He succeeded his cousin Henry Eden to that position. He took command of the second-rate HMS ''London'' in 1853 and saw action in the bombardment of Sevastopol during the Crimean War. He was awarded the Order of the Medjidie 3rd Class in 1858. He then became Comptroller-General of the Coastguard in 1855, Third Naval Lord in 1859 and Second Naval Lord in 1861.
