Charles Derosne
Louis-Charles Derosne (23 January 1780 – 21 September 1846) was a French chemist and an inventor of industrial manufacturing machinery who was actively involved in the French industrial revolution. Derosne was born in Paris where his father François belonged to a family of apothecaries who ran the Cadet-Derosne pharmacy on Rue St. Honoré. His godfather was Charles-Louis Cadet de Gassicourt. After the death of his father in 1796, the pharmacy was run by Charles's older brother Jean-François (1774–1855) who became famous for his analysis of opium in 1803. Charles refined the opioid extract named narcotine and now known to be a mixture of several alkaloids including noscapine. Charles took an interest in analytical chemistry along with his brother and both became members of the Academy of Medicine in Paris, Jean-François in 1821 and Charles in 1823. Rue Saint-Honoré
The rue Saint-Honoré is a street in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, France. It is named after the collegial situated in ancient times within the cloisters of Saint-Honoré. The street, on which are located a number of museums and upscale boutiques, is near the Jardin des Tuileries and the Saint-Honoré market. Like many streets in the heart of Paris, the rue Saint-Honoré, as it is now known, was laid out as early as the Middle Ages or before. The street, at one time, continued beyond the former city walls into what was the ''faubourg'' (from Latin ''foris burgem'', an area "outside the city"). This continuation was eventually named the rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Louis Claude Cadet De Gassicourt
Louis Claude Cadet de Gassicourt (24 July 1731 – 17 October 1799) was a French chemist who synthesised the first organometalic compound. He obtained a red liquid by the reaction of potassium acetate with arsenic trioxide. This liquid is known as Cadet's fuming liquid and contains the two compounds cacodyl and cacodyl oxide. Cadet studied at the Collège des Quatre-Nations and became a pharmacist at the Hotel Royal des Invalides in Paris. He was the brother of the pharmacist Antoine-Alexis Cadet de Vaux. Marie Thérèse Françoise Boisselet became his wife in 1771, at that time her son, fathered by Louis XV, was two years old. The boy was adopted by Cadet as Charles-Louis Cadet. Cadet was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 1787. Noscapine
Noscapine (also known as Narcotine, Nectodon, Nospen, Anarcotine and (archaic) Opiane) is a benzylisoquinoline alkaloid, of the phthalideisoquinoline structural subgroup, which has been isolated from numerous species of the family Papaveraceae (poppy family). It lacks significant hypnotic, euphoric, or analgesic effects affording it with very low addictive potential. This agent is primarily used for its antitussive (cough-suppressing) effects. Medical uses Noscapine is often used as an antitussive medication. A 2012 Dutch guideline, however, does not recommend its use for acute coughing. Jean-François Cail
Jean-François Cail (8 February 1804 – 22 May 1871) was a French entrepreneur and industrialist who was a key figure in French industrialization. Life Childhood Jean-François Cail was born the third of eight children on 8 February 1804. He was the son of Charles Cail (1777-1854), a wheelwright, and his wife, Marie Pinpin (1777-1839). The family had a small cottage in Chef-Boutonne, in Deux-Sévres (16). Partnership with Charles Derosne Jean-François Cail left home in 1816 to start an apprenticeship as a boilermaker. He ended up in the company of Charles Derosne, a manufacturing chemist involved in creating distillation equipment. Getting on well they founded the company Derosne & Cail in 1832.
