Charles D. Lewis (born 1955) is a Barbadian songwriter, recording artist, bassist, engineer, and producer. Career Charles is best known for his writing and performance of " Soca Dance", released in Europe in 1990. It was number one for seven weeks in France and Belgium, gaining gold status in both countries. The song entered the charts in 22 other countries including the top 10 in Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands and sold over 3 million copies worldwide, eventually becoming the 25th highest selling single on the European Top 100 Singles Chart in 1990. His album ''Do You Feel It'' also reached No. 1 in France and Belgium and was also awarded gold status and emerged as the 25th highest selling album on the European Top 100 Albums Chart in 1990. Soca Music
Soca music is a genre of music defined by Lord Shorty, its inventor, as the "Soul of Calypso", which has influences of African and East Indian rhythms. It was originally spelt "sokah" by its inventor but through an error in a local newspaper when reporting on the new music it was erroneously spelt "soca"; Lord Shorty confirmed the error but chose to leave it that way to avoid confusion. It is a genre of music that originated in Trinidad and Tobago in the early 1970s and developed into a range of styles during the 1980s and after. Ampex Golden Reel Award
The Ampex Golden Reel Award was an international music award for studio albums and singles that were recorded and mixed entirely on Ampex audio tape, and which subsequently sold enough units to achieve gold record status in its country of origin. In the United States, gold record status requires sales of 500,000 units, as verified by the Recording Industry Association of America. When an album or single won the award, one Golden Reel commemorative plaque was given to the musical group/artist, and another to the recording studio. Ampex also made a donation to a charity chosen by the group or artist who received the award. They presented the first Golden Reel in 1977, and the 500th in 1986. The European Top 100 Albums chart was the European adaptation of the ''Billboard'' 200 albums chart. It ran from March 1984 until December 2010. Also commonly referred to as Eurochart Top 100 Albums, the chart showcased the sales of an act in 19 European countries based on IFPI data. The European Top 100 combined album sales (both retail and digital) of new and older albums. The methodology was different from the US ''Billboard'' 200, where albums would only be allowed to chart if they weren't 18 months old.
