Charles Chong You Fook
Charles Chong You Fook ( zh, s=张有福, p=Zhāng Yǒufú; born 24 June 1953) is a Singaporean former politician who served as Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Singapore between 2011 and 2020. He served as Acting Speaker of the Parliament of Singapore from 7 August to 11 September 2017, following the resignation of Halimah Yacob on 7 August 2017. Education Chong was educated at St. Michael's School and Saint Joseph's Institution before enrolling into University of California, San Diego where he studied orthopedic surgery. The speaker of the Parliament of Singapore is the presiding officer of the Parliament of Singapore. The speaker is nominated by the prime minister before being appointed by the Parliament. The speaker is also second in the presidential line of succession. The incumbent speaker is Tan Chuan-Jin, who took office on 11 September 2017. Although Singapore is modelled after the Westminster system, unlike their counterpart in the United Kingdom—where the speaker must remain strictly non-partisan and renounce all affiliation with their former political parties when taking office and afterwards, the speaker of the Parliament of Singapore can choose to remain partisan. It had only existed once in 1997 general election. This GRC was created from the wards of Pasir Ris and parts of Tampines North from the defunct Eunos Group Representation Constituency In 2001 General Election, this GRC had absorbed 3 wards in Punggol areas, while 3 of the existing 4 member wards in Pasir Ris was consolidated into 2 wards. With such enlargement, this GRC was renamed into Pasir Ris–Punggol GRC and expands to a 5 members GRC. The People's Action Party (abbreviation: PAP) is a major conservative centre-right political party in Singapore and is one of the three contemporary political parties represented in Parliament, alongside the opposition Workers' Party (WP) and Progress Singapore Party (PSP). Colony Of Singapore
Singapore was a British colony for 144 years, apart from a period of occupation under the Japanese Empire from 1942 to 1945 during the Pacific War. Ho Peng Kee
Ho Peng Kee ( zh, s=何炳基, p=Hé Bǐngjī; born 9 May 1954) is a Singaporean legal academic and former politician. A member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), he was the Senior Minister of State in the Ministry of Law and the Ministry of Home Affairs, and a Member of Parliament representing the Nee Soon East Single Member Constituency. He announced his retirement from politics on 31 March 2011, prior to the 2011 Singapore general election. Ho was formerly an academic, and at one time the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Law at the National University of Singapore (NUS).
