Charles Cahill (rugby League)
Charles Lawrence "Chicka" Cahill (28 January 1916 – 14 July 2007) was an Australian premiership-winning rugby league footballer. He played in the forwards for the Newtown club in the New South Wales Rugby Football League premiership from 1941 to 1947. Playing career Born in Wickham, New South Wales, Cahill's first senior football was played in the Newcastle Rugby League with the Northern Suburbs club. He came to Sydney during WWII joining Newtown from the 1941 season. Cahill first enjoyed premiership success in the 1943 season with Newtown. His good form continued in the 1944 season, as he helped Newtown become minor premiers and runners-up. In the 1945 season Cahill was the competition's top try-scorer. He also represented New South Wales in the 1940s and was probably denied international representative honours due to the war. Wickham, New South Wales
Wickham is an inner suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, located from Newcastle's central business district. History The Aboriginal people, in this area, the Awabakal, were the first people of this land. Wickham which was a Misspelling of Whickham, a suburb of Newcastle upon Tyne in the north of England. Means village by the creek. Wickham was proclaimed a Municipality in the NSW Government Gazette, 27 February 1871, largely by the efforts of James Hannell, who became Wickham's first mayor. Transport Wickham railway station was served by NSW TrainLink's Central Coast & Newcastle Line and Hunter Line. The railway line is part of the Newcastle-Maitland line, the first section of the Main North line from Sydney to the New England region, opened in 1857. Charles Allan Ellis (1909–1984) was an Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1930s and 1940s. Background Ellis was born in Marrickville, New South Wales Marrickville is a suburb in the Inner West of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Playing career Ellis joined the Newtown club, playing six first grade seasons with the club between 1935 and 1940. He also captained the club in his final seasons. He is the brother of two other Newtown legends; Keith Ellis and Tom Ellis. Coaching career As his brothers did before him, Ellis coached the lower grades at Newtown for many years, including winning a third grade premiership in 1943. Dick Poole (rugby League)
Herbert Richard Poole (born 1930) is an Australian former rugby league footballer and coach. He was a for the Australian national team. He played in ten Tests and three World Cup games between 1955 and 1957, as captain on three occasions. Background Poole was born in Surry Hills, New South Wales, Australia. Club career Poole played junior football at the De La Salle school in Marrickville and then with the Earlwood Christian Youth Organisation before being graded with Newtown in 1949. Initially he played mainly in reserve grade with occasional first grade appearances up until 1952 when he established himself as a centre in the top grade. He was captain-coach of Newtown in 1955 when they went down by one point to South Sydney in the Grand Final. He played for 133 games for Newtown over nine seasons till 1958, the last four seasons as captain-coach.
