Charles Best (poet)
Charles Best (1570–1627) was an English poet. Best was a contributor to Francis Davison's ''Poetical Rapsodie'' (1608). The first edition of that anthology contains two pieces by Best, ''A Sonnet of the Sun'' (eighteen lines) and ''A Sonnet of the Moon''. In the third edition (1611) Best contributed ''An Epitaph on Henry Fourth, the last French King'', ''An Epitaph on Queen Elizabeth'', ''Union's Jewell'', 'A Panegyrick to my Sovereign Lord the King,' and a few other pieces. Charles Best (also ''Carl Conrad Best''; February 1765 in Hannover – 5 December 1836 in Verden) was a British army officer of Hanoverian descent who served in the armies of the East India Company, Britain and Hanover from 1781 until the end of the Napoleonic Wars. Biography Best commenced his military career in 1781, as a cadet in the 2nd, or Duke of York's (Prince Frederick's) Hanoverian Regiment of Infantry Two Hanoverian regiments of foot being raised for the service of the East India Company, styled the 14th and 15th regiments, this officer was appointed, June, 1781, ensign in the former. Charles Herbert Best (February 27, 1899 – March 31, 1978) was an American-Canadian medical scientist and one of the co-discoverers of insulin. Biography Born in West Pembroke, Maine on February 27, 1899 to Luella Fisher and Herbert Huestis Best, Canadian born physician from Nova Scotia. Best grew up in Pembroke before going to Toronto, Ontario to study medicine in 1915. Best married Margaret Hooper Mahon in Toronto in 1924 and they had two sons. One son, Henry Best was a well-regarded historian who later became president of Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario. Best's other son was Charles Alexander Best, a Canadian politician and geneticist. Best is the grandfather of Susan MacTavish Best. His father, Herbert Best, was a doctor in a small Maine town with a limited economy based mostly on sardine-packing. Charles Best is an American philanthropist and entrepreneur. He is the founder and CEO of DonorsChoose.org, a crowdfunding platform for K-12 teachers serving in US schools, and the founder of , a crowd-sourced writing style guide. Education Best graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Yale College in 1998. He also holds a certificate in fundraising management from the Harvard Kennedy School. Career Two years after his college graduation, Best launched DonorsChoose.org while serving as a high school history teacher in the Bronx. Best founded the organization after seeing first-hand the limited resources and opportunities available in his school.
