Charles Andrew Muecke
Charles Andrew Muecke (February 20, 1918 – September 21, 2007) was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of Arizona. Education and career Born in New York City, New York, Muecke received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of William & Mary in 1941 and a Bachelor of Laws from the James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona in 1953. He was a United States Marine Corps Major during World War II, from 1942 to 1946, and remained at that rank in the United States Marine Corps Reserve until 1950. Because of his excellent German, he was tapped by the Office of Strategic Services (the precursor to the Central Intelligence Agency) to go to France, where he worked with German defectors to return to Germany to spy on the Nazi regime. Senior Status
Senior status is a form of semi-retirement for United States federal judges. To qualify, a judge in the Federal judiciary of the United States, federal court system must be at least 65 years old, and the sum of the judge's age and years of service as a federal judge must be at least 80 years. As long as senior judges carry at least a 25 percent caseload or meet other criteria for activity, they remain entitled to maintain a staffed office and chambers, including a secretary and their normal complement of law clerks, and they continue to receive annual cost-of-living increases. Senior judges vacate their seats on the bench, and the President of the United States, president may appoint new full-time judges to fill those seats. Some U.S. states have similar systems for senior judges. The Office of Strategic Services (OSS) was the intelligence agency of the United States during World War II. The OSS was formed as an agency of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) to coordinate espionage activities behind enemy lines for all branches of the United States Armed Forces. Other OSS functions included the use of propaganda, subversion, and post-war planning. The OSS was dissolved a month after the end of the war.
