Charles Ambler
Charles James Ambler (13 August 1868 – 5 September 1952), born Charles James Toby, was an English footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He made a single appearance in the Football League for Royal Arsenal and had two spells at Tottenham Hotspur, making 20 Southern League appearances in his second spell. He also played, mainly as a reserve team player, for West Ham United, where he made two first team appearances, and later with Millwall. Life and career Born in Alverstoke, Hampshire, Ambler began his career at Bostall Rovers before signing as a professional with Royal Arsenal (soon after renamed Woolwich Arsenal) in 1891. He returned to the amateur ranks the following season, which, while nominally being registered as an Arsenal player, enabled him to play for a variety of clubs with no fixed tenure at any of them. Alverstoke
Alverstoke is a small settlement which forms part of the borough of Gosport, on the south coast of Hampshire, England. It stretches east–west from Fort Blockhouse, Haslar to Browndown Battery, and is centred east of the shore of Stokes Bay and near the head of a creek which extends a mile westward from Portsmouth Harbour. Residents of Alverstoke have at times in the 20th century been called 'The Alverstocracy' by some residents of Gosport, in a tongue-in-cheek fashion, due to higher house prices and a perceived higher social status of the area. In sports, a reserve team is a team composed of players under contract to a club but who do not normally play in matches for the first team. The FA Amateur Cup was an English football competition for amateur clubs. It commenced in 1893 and ended in 1974 when the Football Association abolished official amateur status. History Following the legalisation of professionalism within football, professional teams quickly came to dominate the sport's main national knock-out tournament, the FA Cup. In response to this, the committee of the country's oldest club, Sheffield F.C., suggested in 1892 the organisation of a separate national cup solely for amateur teams, and even offered to pay for the trophy itself.
