Charles Addington Hanbury
Charles Addington Hanbury (bapt. 16 September 1828''London, England, Church of England Births and Baptisms, 1813-1917'' – 13 December 1900) was an English brewer from the Hanbury brewing family and a master of the Brewers' Company in 1857. Family Hanbury was born in Upper Clapton, Hackney, London, to Robert Hanbury, a partner for more than 50 years in the brewers Truman, Hanbury, Buxton & Co., and his wife, Emily Hall Hanbury. In 1853, he married Christine Isabella MacKenzie in Inverness. One of their sons was the geographer, traveller and author, David Theophilus Hanbury. Career In 1859, Hanbury was commissioned as a lieutenant in the 12th Middlesex Rifle Volunteers, a unit got up by Wilbraham Taylor of Hadley Hurst, a gentleman usher to Queen Victoria who became a captain in the unit. Brewers' Company
The Worshipful Company of Brewers is one of the livery companies of the City of London. London brewers are known to have organised as a group in the 13th century. Their first royal charter was granted by Henry VI in 1438. In 1643, Parliament imposed excise taxes on beer, ale, and malt, steadily increasing them until gin became cheaper, causing the growth of unlicensed breweries and, in 1685, James II extended the company's jurisdiction to eight miles around London and its suburbs. In 1739 it adopted new by-laws, which included the requirement for members to "enter into a bond ..with the company against any expenses of their being elected to the office of sheriff or lord mayor". The company started to go into decline about 1750. They are the trustees of the Dame Alice Owen Foundation, which supports Dame Alice Owen's School. Victoria County History
The Victoria History of the Counties of England, commonly known as the Victoria County History or the VCH, is an English history project which began in 1899 with the aim of creating an encyclopaedic history of each of the historic counties of England, and was dedicated to Victoria of the United Kingdom, Queen Victoria. In 2012 the project was rededicated to Elizabeth II, Queen Elizabeth II in celebration of her Diamond Jubilee year. Grandborough
Grandborough is a small village and civil parish in the Rugby district, in the county of Warwickshire, England. The parish includes the hamlets of Calcutt, Grandborough Fields and Woolscott. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 424. Grandborough is in a rural area of eastern Warwickshire, around six miles (10 km) south of Rugby and six miles northwest of Daventry, Northamptonshire. Grandborough is about two miles from the nearest main roads and can be reached by country lanes from the A45 to the east, and the A426 to the west. The River Leam flows north of the village. There was a watermill (now a private residence) where the river passed under the road from Woolscott. In times of flood, the river flows over the road creating a ford. Belmont (East Barnet)
Belmont, originally known as Mount Pleasant, was a house in East Barnet, London, near Cockfosters, that dated back to the sixteenth century. By the end of the nineteenth century it had become Heddon Court and was the home of a preparatory school for boys. The school closed in 1933 and the house was demolished. The site is now occupied by suburban housing. History The estate later known as Mount Pleasant was held in the sixteenth century by a member of the Rolfe family who is mentioned in sources as early as 1406. Clapton is a district of East London, England, in the London Borough of Hackney. Clapton is divided into Upper Clapton, in the north, and Lower Clapton to the south. Clapton railway station lies north-east of Charing Cross. Geography and origins The hamlet of Clapton emerged in the manor and Ancient Parish of Hackney. Origins The hamlet of Clapton was, from 1339 (when first recorded) until the 18th century normally rendered as Clopton, meaning the "farm on the hill".
