Charles A. Reed (fireboat)
The ''Charles A. Reed'' was the City of Toronto's first official fireboat. She was commissioned in 1923. Previously the privately owned T.J. Clark (fireboat), ''T.J. Clark'' had provided firefighting capability. The ''Charles A. Reed'' was used well into the 1950s and retired in 1964 and replaced by William Lyon Mackenzie (fireboat), William Lyon Mackenzie. The ''Charles A. Reed'' was deployed to fight the fire that destroyed the SS Noronic, SS ''Noronic'' in 1949 at Pier 9. Historian Mike Filey described the vessel's wooden hull being damaged by the heat of the ''Noronic''s blaze. Filey said the vessel was a converted pleasure craft. Filey wrote that the vessel's namesake, Charles Ardagh Reed, served a single term as Ward 3 (The Ward) Alderman from 1922 to 1923. He wrote that there is no record of the association with the fire department, that triggered him being honoured by having a fireboat named after him. Fireboat
A fireboat or fire-float is a specialized watercraft with pumps and nozzles designed for fighting shoreline and shipboard fires. The first fireboats, dating to the late 18th century, were tugboats, retrofitted with firefighting equipment. Older designs derived from tugboats and modern fireboats more closely resembling seafaring ships can both be found in service today. Some departments would give their multi-purpose craft the title of "fireboat" also. They are frequently used for fighting fires on docks and shore side warehouses as they can directly attack fires in the supporting underpinnings of these structures. They also have an effectively unlimited supply of water available, pumping directly from below the hull. William Lyon Mackenzie (fireboat)
''William Lyon Mackenzie'', is a fireboat operated by Toronto Fire Services (TFS) which provides marine fire fighting and icebreaking capabilities within the Toronto Harbour. Built by Russel Brothers in 1964, it is named after William Lyon Mackenzie, the first mayor of Toronto. In 2004 the fireboat was refurbished and it is expected to be in service until 2037. SS Noronic
SS ''Noronic'' was a Canadian passenger ship that was destroyed by fire in Toronto Harbour in September 1949 with the loss of at least 118 lives. Construction In 1910 the Northern Navigation Company, a subsidiary of the Richelieu and Ontario Navigation Company, engaged in an operating agreement with the Grand Trunk Railway (GTR), for the construction of a new ship. While Northern did not immediately propose to build a new steamer at that time, the addition of new cabins for the ''Huronic'' was also under consideration. In mid-January 1911, shipping entrepreneur James Playfair (businessman), James Playfair made a bid to purchase the Northern on behalf of himself and his associates. Mike Filey
Mike Filey (October 11, 1941 – July 30, 2022) was a Canadian historian, radio host, journalist and author. He was awarded the Jean Hibbert Memorial Award in 2009 for promoting the city of Toronto and its history. Early life Born in 1941 in Toronto, Filey attended high school at North Toronto Collegiate Institute and earned a degree in chemical technology from Ryerson Polytechnical Institute. As a child, Filey lived with his family on Bathurst Street, just south of the iconic Honest Ed's. Career Filey began his career at what is now the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, working there for nine years. He then worked for five years at the Canadian National Exhibition and four years at Canada's Wonderland.
