Charlemont (Parliament Of Ireland Constituency)
Charlemont was a constituency represented in the Irish House of Commons, the house of representatives of the Kingdom of Ireland, from 1613 to 1800. It represented Charlemont, County Armagh, an important military post since the founding of Charlemont Fort in 1602. Henry Grattan
Henry Grattan (3 July 1746 – 4 June 1820) was an Irish politician and lawyer who campaigned for legislative freedom for the Irish Parliament in the late 18th century from Britain. He was a Member of the Irish Parliament (MP) from 1775 to 1801 and a Member of Parliament (MP) in Westminster from 1805 to 1820. He has been described as a superb orator and a romantic. With generous enthusiasm he demanded that Ireland should be granted its rightful status, that of an independent nation, though he always insisted that Ireland would remain linked to Great Britain by a common crown and by sharing a common political tradition. Grattan opposed the Act of Union 1800 that merged the Kingdoms of Ireland and Great Britain, but later sat as a member of the united Parliament in London. The Honourable Francis Caulfeild ( – November 1775), was an Irish politician who represented County Armagh and Charlemont. Early life Caulfeild was born in Chester in . He was the second surviving son of James Caulfeild, 3rd Viscount Charlemont and Elizabeth Bernard. His elder brother inherited their father's viscountcy and was further ennobled as James Caulfeild, 1st Earl of Charlemont. His sister, Hon. Alicia Caulfeild, married John Browne, 1st Baron Kilmaine. His maternal grandparents were Alice ( Ludlow) Bernard (a daughter of Stephen Ludlow, Clerk of the Court of Chancery) and Francis Bernard, MP and judge of the Court of Common Pleas. Sir Humphrey May (1573 – 9 June 1630) was an English courtier and politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1605 and 1629. Career May was the fourth son of Richard May, Merchant Taylor of London. He matriculated from St John's College, Oxford on 25 October 1588, graduated B.A. on 3 March 1592, and became student of the Middle Temple in 1592. In February 1604, he was groom of the King's privy chamber. May was elected Member of Parliament for Beeralston at a by-election in 1605. George Dodington (c. 1662 – 28 March 1720) of Eastbury Park, Dorset was a merchant, office holder and Whig politician who sat in the English and British House of Commons from 1705 to 1720, under the patronage of Edward Russell, 1st Earl of Orford. Early life and family Dodington was the eldest son of John Dodington of Dodington, Somerset and his wife Hester Temple, daughter of Sir Peter Temple, 2nd Baronet of Stowe, Buckinghamshire. His grandfather Sir Francis Dodington had been granted in trust the profits of a commissionership of appeals in excise which fell to his son. When Dodington's father died in 1673, Sir Francis' second wife tried to claim these but Dodington's mother counter-claimed and as a result Dodington was appointed to a post on the commission. Business activities Dodington prospered and by 1688 was part owner of four ships. In 1690 he and his partners secured lucrative contracts for supplying clothing to the army.
