Chapman High School is a public secondary school in Chapman, Kansas, United States. It is the sole high school operated by Chapman USD 473 school district. The mascot for CHS athletic teams is the Fighting Irish. Students come to CHS from Chapman Middle School which is fed by elementary schools throughout Dickinson County, Kansas. There are four other districts in Dickinson County History Originally named Dickinson County Community High School, the high school was established in 1889 as the nation's first county high school. In 1961, a second high school was completed, which replaced the 1880s school. In 1966, USD 473 was created by the merging of 11 grade schools and this high school. There were 105 teachers and 1,736 students in the district. At this time, the school was renamed Chapman High School with 530 students. Abilene High School is a public secondary school in Abilene, Kansas, United States, serving grades 9–12. The school is operated by Abilene USD 435 school district. The current building serves students from the city itself as well as outlying areas covered by the nearby Chapman district. Abilene is a member of the Kansas State High School Activities Association and offers a variety of sports programs. Athletic teams compete in class 4A. A program of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), it is designed to recognize students for their academic and musical achievements and to provide leadership and service opportunities to young musicians. Terrel Howard Bell (November 11, 1921June 22, 1996) was the Secretary of Education in the Cabinet of President Ronald Reagan. He was the second Secretary of Education, following Shirley Hufstedler. Early life and career Bell was born in Lava Hot Springs, Idaho, on November 11, 1921; at age eight, his father died. Bell graduated from Lava Hot Springs High School and the Albion State Normal School in 1946. After this he served as a school superintendent of various schools in Idaho and Wyoming.
