Chaplain-in-Chief
The Royal Air Force Chaplains Branch provides military chaplains for the Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom. Mission The Mission of the Royal Air Force Chaplains Branch is to serve the RAF Community through: Prayer, Presence and Proclamation. The motto of the branch ''Ministrare Non Ministrari'' translates as ''..To serve, not to be served'' and is derived from Mark chapter 10: verse 45. History The Reverend Harry Viener was invested as the first Chaplain-in-Chief on 11 October 1918 with the Chaplaincy branch officially established in December 1918. Reverend Viener had been a Naval Chaplain and was 'lent' to the Air Force by the Admiralty. A Chaplaincy school was established at Magdalene College, Cambridge University in November 1943 with the motto of 'Truth'. Jonathan Chaffey
Jonathan Paul Michael Chaffey, (born 1962) is a British Church of England priest and former military chaplain, who served with the Royal Air Force. He serves as Archdeacon of Oxford in the same diocese; from 2014 to 2018 he served as the Chaplain-in-Chief and head of the Royal Air Force Chaplains Branch. He previously served as Deputy Chaplain-in-Chief. Early life Chaffey was born in 1962 in London, England. He was educated at Worksop College, a private school in Worksop, Nottinghamshire. He studied at St Chad's College, Durham, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in 1983. In 1984, he entered Cranmer Hall, Durham, an Anglican theological college attached to St John's College, Durham, to train for ordained ministry. Archdeacon For The Royal Air Force
The most senior Anglican chaplain in each branch of the British Armed Forces (Royal Navy, British Army, and Royal Air Force) is made an archdeacon in the Church of England. Respectively they are titled the Archdeacon for the Royal Navy, the Archdeacon for the Army, and the Archdeacon for the Royal Air Force. As an archdeacon, they are styled ''The Venerable''. Ray Pentland
Raymond Jackson Pentland, (born 14 July 1957) is a British Church of England priest. He is a retired military chaplain, having served as Chaplain-in-Chief of the Royal Air Force and head of its Chaplains Branch from 2009 to 2014. Early life Pentland was born on 14 July 1957 in Greenock, Scotland, to Adam Jackson Pentland and Edith Henderson Pentland. He was educated at Cowdenknowes High School. Career Civilian ministry Pentland attended the William Booth Memorial Training College from 1977. Upon graduation in 1979, he became an Officer of The Salvation Army. He served in number of inner city locations throughout the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1986. Leonard Ashton
Leonard James Ashton, (27 June 1915 – 19 January 2001) was an English Anglican bishop and military chaplain. He was the inaugural Bishop in Cyprus and the Gulf, serving from 1976 to 1983. He had previously spent most of his ordained ministry serving in the Chaplains Branch of the Royal Air Force, and rose to become its Chaplain-in-Chief (1969 to 1973). John Jagoe
John Arthur Jagoe CBE (2 January 188916 October 1962) was an Irish Anglican bishop who served as Chaplain-in-Chief of the (British) Royal Air Force and the second Bishop of Bermuda. Early life Born on 2 January 1889, Jagoe educated at Trinity College, Dublin. Career Jagoe was ordained in 1912. He was a Chaplain to the Forces 4th Class (captain) in World War I and until he transferred to the Royal Air Force. On 30 October 1923, he was commissioned into the Royal Air Force Chaplains Branch and granted the relative rank of squadron leader. He was granted a permanent commission on 6 July 1927. Air Vice-Marshal Giles Leslie Legood, (born 1967) is a British Anglican priest. Since July 2022 he has served as Chaplain-in-Chief of the Royal Air Force Chaplains Branch and Archdeacon for the Royal Air Force. He previously served as Deputy Chaplain-in-Chief. Harry Viener
Harry Dan Leigh Viener, CBE, UCd'I (26 December 1868 – 7 May 1947) was an eminent Anglican Chaplain in the first half of the 20th century. In 1918, he joined the fledgling Royal Air Force Chaplains Branch as its first Chaplain-in-Chief. Early life and education Viener was born on 26 December 1868 in Blackpool, England, and initially lived at The White House, the family home, in nearby Poulton-le-Fylde. He was educated at Malvern College, then an all-boys public school in Malvern, Worcestershire. He studied at St John's College, Oxford. In 1890, he was awarded a Casberd exhibition. Maurice Henry Edwards, OBE (17 May 1886 – 26 April 1961) was a British Anglican priest. During World War II, from 1940 to 1944, he was Chaplain-in-Chief of the Royal Air Force. Peter Watson Mills, CB (born 1955) is a British minister of the Church of Scotland and a retired senior Royal Air Force officer. Wilfred Payton (priest)
The Venerable Wilfred Ernest Granville Payton CB, MA (27 December 1913 – 4 September 1989) was an English clergyman and cricketer who played first-class cricket for Nottinghamshire in 1935, Cambridge University in 1937 and Derbyshire in 1949. Payton was born at Beeston, Nottinghamshire, the son of Wilfred Payton who also played for Nottinghamshire. He was educated at Nottingham High School and Emmanuel College, Cambridge.
