Channel 8 (Singapore)
Channel 8 ( zh, 8頻道) is a Singaporean free-to-air television channel, airing in Mandarin Chinese. It was created by Television Singapura on 31 August 1963 with experimental broadcasts, before going official on 23 November that year. The channel's logo is a yellow number 8 on top of a red disc. History Channel 8 began its test transmissions on Saturday, 31 August 1963, Malaysia's national day. Its first day consisted of a Hokkien film, repeats of India's participation in the South East Asian Cultural Festival and Singapore Celebrates. A second test transmission took place between 16 and 20 September of that year and devoted much of its time to the week-long celebrations, to coincide with the historic Proclamation of Malaysia, and the political campaigns leading up to the 1963 General Election. 8TV (Malaysian TV Network)
8TV () is a Malaysian Chinese-language free-to-air television (formerly both English and Chinese-language free-to-air television) network focused on the Chinese community of Malaysia. Its programming consists of mostly dramas, sitcoms, and reality shows made in Chinese, either produced in Malaysia or imported from other countries, such as Hong Kong, China, Taiwan and Singapore, the occasional Korean drama, Japanese anime and Asian and Hollywood movie blockbusters for Malaysian viewers. Speak Mandarin Campaign
The Speak Mandarin Campaign (SMC; ) is an initiative by the government of Singapore to encourage the Singaporean Chinese population to speak Standard Mandarin Chinese, one of the four official languages of Singapore. Launched on 7 September 1979 by then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and organised by the Promote Mandarin Council, the SMC has been an annual event promoting the use of Mandarin. Caldecott Hill
Caldecott Hill is a private housing estate, located along Thomson Road in the Central Region of Singapore. It is tied to the growth of the media industry in Singapore. In the past, Singapore's broadcast station, Mediacorp was located there. The Caldecott Broadcast Centre opened in 1954. In 2017, Mediacorp moved to its new campus on Stars Avenue, one-north. After Mediacorp moved, the old campus at Andrew Road was left abandoned until October 2020 where they appointed real estate consultants to market the area to hold 67 bungalow plots. In December 2020, the land was sold for $280.9million to a private estate company. It was also referred to as "The Hill" by the local media and Mediacorp employees. 1963 Singaporean General Election
General elections were held in Singapore on 21 September 1963. The elections saw the Malaysian ruling party, United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), backed with Singapore Alliance Party (SAP) in an attempt to oust the People's Action Party (PAP), after violating previous agreement not to do so and a highlight in the relations between UMNO and the PAP. However, the result was a victory for the PAP, which won 37 of the 51 seats in the Singapore Legislative Assembly. The 1963 election was the only election to date with no boundary changes to any of the 51 existing constituencies. As Singapore would gain independence in 1965, this election was the only election that was held as a state of Malaysia.
