''Chandrakanta ('' Devanagri-''चन्द्रकान्ता'' ; IAST''-Candrakāntā'') is an epic fantasy Hindi novel by Devaki Nandan Khatri. Published in 1888, it was the first modern Hindi novel. It gained a cult following, and contributed to the popularity of the Hindi language. The copyright on the novel expired in 1964 and it is now in public domain, along with other titles by the author. It inspired Nirja Guleri's mega-budget TV serial of the same name (though the screenplay had many differences from the novel) which became one of the biggest-ever blockbusters in the history of Indian television. Story The story is a romantic fantasy about two lovers who belong to rival kingdoms: the princess Chandrakanta of Vijaygarh, and the prince Virendra Singh of Naugarh. ''Chandrakanta — Ek Mayavi Prem Gaatha'' (English: ''Moonlight - An Elusive Love Story'') is an Indian supernatural fantasy television series which premiered on Colors TV on 24 June 2017 and ended on 16 June 2018. Based on the 1888 novel of the same name by Devaki Nandan Khatri, it tells the story of Princess Chandrakanta. ''Chandrakanta'' is an Indian fantasy television series partly based on Devaki Nandan Khatri's 1888 novel of the same name. It was originally telecast on DD National between 1994 and 1996 and was created, written, produced, and directed by Nirja Guleri. Devaki Nandan Khatri (18 June 1861– 1 August 1913) was an Indian writer who lived in Varanasi and wrote the historic fiction fantasy novel ''Chandrakanta (novel), Chandrakanta''. Biography He was born on 18 June 1861 in a Punjabi family in Pusa village of Muzaffarpur district of Bengal Presidency, British India (present day Bihar, India). His father's name was Lala Ishwardas. His forefathers were residents of Punjab (Lahore) and held high positions during the reign of the Mughals. Lala Ishwardas settled in Varanasi, Benaras during the reign of Sher Singh, son of Ranjit Singh, Maharaj Ranjit Singh. Khatri's early education was in Urdu-Persian language, Persian. Later he also studied Hindi, Sanskrit and English. After finishing his early education, he reached Tekari Raj in Gaya (India), Gaya and got a job with the king there. Chandrakanta (1938- ) is a writer, born in Srinagar, India. She has written many novels and stories in the Hindi language including the epic ''Katha Satisar'', which was awarded the Vyas Samman prize in 2005. To date, her published short stories number about 200. She has also published seven novels as well as poetical works. Her writing concerns socio-political issues and women's concerns in general. The Indian State of Kashmir constitutes the backdrop of most of her writings, especially terrorism and the repercussions of it, notably the mass exodus of the majority community of "Kashmiri Pandits".
