Chandra Prasad Saikia
Chandra Prasad Saikia (1927–2006) was a writer from Assam, India. He was the president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha held at Hajo and Jorhat district, Assam in 1999 and 2000, respectively. Saikia was born on 8 July 1927 in Jalukgaon, Jhanji in Sivasagar district, Assam. After having primary education in Sivasagar he had left for Kolkata for higher education. Jhanji
Jhanji is a small semi-rural area situated in Sivasagar and Jorhat districts. The river Jhanji River divides these two districts. History The river Jhanji is famous from the time of Ahom kingdom in Assam. It physically divides Jorhat and Sivasagar districts of Assam.The word Jhanji is an Assamese compound word. In Assamese, Jhanji means "jhanjori kohiyua nodi"; the river which flows waste products of flood. In the time of flood it carries away trees, mud, etc. So it was named as Jhanji. In old bihu songs such as Jibon Jaji noi and Jhanji noi eribo nuwaru, the Jhanji river is mentioned. Tamulichiga, Bhogamukh, and Khonamukh are three famous places on the banks of the Jhanji river. History Of Assamese Literature
Assamese is part of the easternmost group of the Indo-Aryan languages. History of Assamese literature can largely be classified into three periods, including: Early Assamese period (6th to 15th century A.D.), Middle Assamese period (17th to 19th Century A.D.) and, Modern Assamese (late 19th century onwards). Beginnings The history of Assam can be traced to the 4th century AD, though relics from beyond this period suggests some kind of a pre-history, through cave paintings, etchings on pots etc. The Charyapadas have almost been referred to as the earliest example of Assamese literature. The Charyapadas pertain to Buddhist songs penned within the period of 8th to 12th centuries. These writings, by the way, correspond to Oriya and Bengali languages as well.
