Chambersburg Maroons
The Chambersburg Maroons were a baseball team located in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. They called historic Henninger Field their home, and had done so since the club's creation in 1895. They played their last season in 2010, ending 116 years of existence. History Early Years Baseball has been in Chambersburg since the late nineteenth century. On May 16, 1883, a portable dynamo and six 2,000-watt candle lamps were placed on a railcar by the Cumberland Valley Railroad at a cost of $2,753.75. The apparatus was given its first trial run at a night baseball game between George Pensinger's railroad team and Henninger's club from Chambersburg. Many consider this to be the first night baseball game ever played. A Chambersburg team was part of the Keystone Association which played for one season in 1884. Chambersburg is a borough in and the county seat of Franklin County, in the South Central region of Pennsylvania, United States. It is in the Cumberland Valley, which is part of the Great Appalachian Valley, and north of Maryland and the Mason-Dixon line and southwest of Harrisburg, the state capital. Brooklyn Robins
The Brooklyn Dodgers were a Major League Baseball team founded in 1884 as a member of the American Association before joining the National League in 1890. They remained in Brooklyn until 1957, after which the club moved to Los Angeles, California, where it continues its history as the Los Angeles Dodgers. The team moved west at the same time as its longtime rival, the New York Giants, relocated to San Francisco in northern California as the San Francisco Giants. Mike Mowrey
Harry Harlan Mowrey (March 24, 1884 – March 20, 1947) was an American professional baseball third baseman who played in the Major Leagues from 1905 to 1917. He would play for the Cincinnati Reds, St. Louis Cardinals, Brooklyn Robins, and Pittsburgh Pirates. Jacob Mowrey, Harry's father and the town's sheriff, frequently housed tramps in his jail cell overnight. Young Harry became particularly friendly with one tramp, prompting one of his brothers to nickname him "Mike the Hobo." Mowrey was best known for his unorthodox fielding style—instead of catching a hard smash in his glove, he would knock the ball to the ground and then pick it up to throw out the runner. Defending against the bunt was a corner infielder's primary responsibility during the Deadball Era, and in 1910 Alfred H. Spink called Mowrey "the best fielder of bunts in either league." Harry Sibley Hinchman (August 4, 1878 – January 19, 1933) was a Major League Baseball second baseman who played for one season. He played in 15 games for the Cleveland Naps during the 1907 Cleveland Naps season. In contrast to his one season in the major leagues, Hinchman played for 18 seasons in the minor leagues. He began his professional career with the Ilion Typewriters of the New York State League in 1902. His best year as a player in 1915 with the Kansas City Blues of the American Association. Parksley Spuds
The Parksley Spuds was a Class D minor league baseball team based in Parksley, Virginia, which had a population of just over 600 people at the 1920 United States Census. They played in the Eastern Shore League between 1922 and 1928, the entire run of the league's initial incarnation. The Spuds won multiple league pennants during that span. The league encountered financial difficulties during the 1928 season and the owners of the teams voted to disband the league. One of the notable players to appear for the Spuds was Jimmie Foxx; he was a catcher for the team during its visit to a 1924 championship series known as the Five-State Championship. Mickey Keliher
Maurice Michael Keliher (January 11, 1890 – September 7, 1930) was a professional baseball first baseman. He played in three games for the 1911 Pittsburgh Pirates and in 2 games for the 1912 Pirates. In 7 at-bats he never recorded a Major League hit. He began his professional career in 1910 with Petersburg and Portsmouth of the Virginia League. After his major league appearances he continued to play in the minor leagues. He spent the last four years of his minor career (1926–1929) with the class D Blue Ridge League. In 1926, he led the Blue Ridge League with a .370 batting average. He was later a player/manager for the Chambersburg Maroons (1927–1928) and Hagerstown Hubs (1929).
