Alan Chalmers
Alan Francis Chalmers (; born 1939) is a British-Australian philosopher of science and associate professor at the University of Sydney. Education Chalmers was born in Bristol, England in 1939, and was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics at the University of Bristol in 1961, and his Master of Science in physics from the University of Manchester in 1964. His PhD on the electromagnetic theory of James Clerk Maxwell was awarded by the University of London in 1971. Career Chalmers went to Australia as a postdoctoral fellow in 1971. He was a member of the Department of General Philosophy from 1972 to 1986, and from 1986 to 1999 was the head of the Department of the History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Sydney, where he remains an honorary associate professor. George W. John George Chalmers
John George Chalmers (August 17, 1874 – June 8, 1962) was an American football, basketball, and baseball coach. He served as the head football coach at Franklin & Marshall College (1902), the University of Iowa (1903–1905), Columbia College in Dubuque, Iowa, now known as Loras College, (1907–1914), and the University of Dubuque (1914–1924), compiling a career college football record of 100–47–8. Chalmers was also the head men's basketball coach at Iowa for one season (1904–1905), tallying a mark of 6–8, and the baseball coach at Iowa for two seasons (1904–1905) and at Columbia College from 1915 to 1921. Joan Chalmers
Margaret Joan Chalmers, (May 30, 1928 – December 2, 2016) was a Canadian philanthropist and supporter of the arts. Born in Toronto, Ontario, she and her parents, Floyd and Jean Chalmers, founded the annual Chalmers Awards in 1972, which donates $25,000 CAD to artists in dance, theatre, crafts, film, the visual arts and music. She was involved with the travelling exhibit, ''Survivors in Search of a Voice: The Art of Courage'', which as a collaboration among 24 prominent Canadian women artists and over 100 breast cancer survivors. While celebrating her 70th birthday in 1998, she announced that she would provide 20 arts groups with a total of $1 million in funding. Chalmers was the partner of former singer-songwriter Barbra Amesbury. She died on December 2, 2016 in Toronto, from injuries suffered in a fall. James Chalmers (3 December 1877 – 12 July 1915) was a Scottish professional footballer who played in the Football League for Sunderland, Notts County and Preston North End as a forward. He also played in the Southern League for Swindon Town, Watford, Tottenham Hotspur and Norwich City. James Chalmers (28 January 1901 – 11 November 1986) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1947 until 1956. He was a member of the Australian Labor Party (New South Wales Branch), Labor Party (ALP) until he resigned from the party in 1952 and then sat as an independent Labor member. Chalmers was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was the son of a coal miner and migrated to Australia with his family at the age of seven. He was educated to elementary level and began work as a coal miner in the Hunter Region when he was 14. He moved to Lithgow, New South Wales, Lithgow in 1916. James Ronald Chalmers
James Ronald Chalmers (January 11, 1831April 9, 1898) was an American politician and senior officer of the Confederate States Army who commanded infantry and cavalry in the Western Theater of the American Civil War. After the war, Chalmers served as a state senator in Mississippi and United States Congressman for several terms from the state's 6th congressional district, beginning in 1876. He was re-elected in 1880 but the election was contested by his Republican African-American opponent, John R. Lynch. Congress awarded the seat to Lynch because of marked election fraud by the Democrats. In 1882 Chalmers ran as an Independent Democrat on a fusionist ticket, with support by Republicans and Greenbackers. He contested the victory of the regular Democrat, and Congress finally awarded the seat to Chalmers, seating him in 1884. He left politics after losing election in the fall of 1884. James Chalmers (missionary)
James Chalmers (4 August 1841 – 8 April 1901) was a Scottish-born missionary, active in New Guinea. Early life James Chalmers was born in the village of Ardrishaig, Argyll, Scotland, the only son of an Aberdonian stonemason. The family moved to Inveraray when James was seven. There he went to the local school, and then to grammar school for about a year when he was 13. Then he was employed in a lawyer's office at Inveraray, and before he was 20 decided to become a missionary. In 1861, he joined the Glasgow City Mission as an evangelist. Here he met the Samoan missionary, George Turner, who suggested he apply as a missionary candidate. Eight months later, the London Missionary Society sent him to Cheshunt College near London to carry on his studies. James Chalmers (2 February 1782 – 26 August 1853) was a Scottish inventor (buried on 1 September 1853) who it was claimed, by his son, was the inventor of the adhesive postage stamps. History He trained as a weaver, before he moved to Dundee in 1809 on the recommendation of his brother. He established himself as a bookseller, printer and newspaper publisher on Castle Street. He is known to have been the publisher of "The Caledonian" as early as 1822. Later he served as a Burgh Councillor and became Convener of the Nine Incorporated Trades. James Robert Alexander Chalmers (born September 1974) is an English actor who has performed in film, television and theatre. Chalmers graduated from the University of Edinburgh and continued his training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Jackie Chalmers
John Chalmers (14 August 1884 - 5 July 1947) was a Scottish footballer who played in the Football League for Stoke and Woolwich Arsenal. Career Chalmers was born in Beith and started his career with Rutherglen Glencairn before turning professional with Rangers. He moved to Stoke City in January 1906 and made an instant impact scoring five goals in five games. He was the club's top scorer in the 1906–07 season, though they were relegated from the First Division. In all he scored 19 goals in 40 appearances but was released in the summer of 1907.
