Challney
Challney is a district in Luton, in the Luton district, in the ceremonial county of Bedfordshire, England, off the main arterial road leading from Luton into Dunstable. The area is roughly bounded by Rodheath, Stoneygate Road, Roman Road, and Beechwood Road to the north, Hatters Way to the south, the M1 to the west, and Waller Avenue and Chaul End Lane to the east. History ''Challney'' was originally just another name for Chaul End up on the hill to the south of the district. Challney was a sleepy residential area until the extension of the nearby M1 motorway on the west side which was built in the early 1960s. The Luton and Dunstable Hospital is also situated nearby in neighbouring Lewsey. Challney is still a relatively residential area with good schooling and local amenities. One of Luton's large retail parks for DIY and electronic goods is located in the area and attracts visitors from all over the county. Challney High School For Boys
Challney High School for Boys is a secondary school located in Luton, Bedfordshire, England. The school educates boys between the ages of 11 and 16. History In 2006 the school was awarded Specialist College Status, with an emphasis on Science and Mathematics. In 2007, Ofsted judged Challney High School for Boys to be “Outstanding” with the same judgement of its English department in 2008. In 2009, Ofsted further highlighted Challney High School for Boys as one of 12 outstanding schools serving disadvantaged communities. Challney High School for Girls is a school comprehensive secondary school for girls, located in the Challney area of Luton, Bedfordshire, England. The school is situated next to Challney High School for Boys and the M1 motorway. The school educates girls aged 11 – 16. For further education courses such as A levels, graduating students usually go on to attend Luton Sixth Form College. In 2006, Challney High School for Girls was awarded specialist status as a Science College. The school continues to offer science as a specialism today. In January 2011, Challney High School for Girls moved into a newly built school on Addington Way not far, almost directly opposite the old building. Luton North is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2019 by Sarah Owen, of the Labour Party. Luton North was created in 1983, primarily from the former seat of Luton West. It consists of the northern portion of the town of Luton, excluding Stopsley. Skimpot
Skimpot is a suburb of Luton, in the Borough of Luton, in the ceremonial county of Bedfordshire, England. The area is roughly bounded by Dunstable Road to the north, Hatters Way to the south, Skimpot Road to the west, and the M1 to the east. Originally a small rural settlement, Skimpot was engulfed by the expanding town of Luton in the mid 20th century. Skimpot Road forms part of the border between Luton and Dunstable. History The east side of Skimpot was the former site of Luton Stadium, a former greyhound racing stadium. The stadium was constructed in 1931 and racing continued there until 1973. The site is now an industrial estate. Leagrave Park
Leagrave is a former village and now a suburb of Luton, in the Borough of Luton, Luton district, in the ceremonial county of Bedfordshire, England, in the northwest of the town. The area is roughly bounded by Vincent Road, Torquay Drive and High Street to the north, Roman Road and Stoneygate Road to the south, the M1 motorway, M1 to the west, and Marsh Road and Leagrave Park to the east. Due to its 35-minute connection by train from Leagrave railway station, Leagrave station into London it is home to significant numbers of commuters, with almost two million using the train station each year. Leagrave station also has connections to Bedford in the north and Brighton in the south by Thameslink (route), Thameslink. Dunstable Downs
Dunstable Downs are part of the Chiltern Hills, in southern Bedfordshire in England, located near (and named after) the town of Dunstable. They are a chalk escarpment forming the north-eastern reaches of the Chilterns. At , Dunstable Downs are the highest point in the county of Bedfordshire. Because of its elevation, Dunstable Downs hosted a station in the shutter telegraph chain which connected the Admiralty in London to its naval ships in the port of Great Yarmouth during the years 1808 to 1814. Whipsnade Zoo has cut an enormous lion shape into the chalk on the side of one of the hills. The lion can be seen from the B489 (Aylesbury to Dunstable road). The downs are used by gliders, kite fliers, hang gliders and paragliders in the area because of their height. The London Gliding Club is based at the foot of the downs. Chiltern Hills
The Chiltern Hills is a chalk escarpment in England. The area, northwest of London, covers stretching from Goring-on-Thames in the southwest to Hitchin in the northeast - across Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, and Bedfordshire. The hills are at their widest. In 1965 almost half of the Chiltern Hills was designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The northwest boundary is clearly defined by the escarpment. The dip slope is by definition more gradual, and merges with the landscape to the southeast. The southwest endpoint is the River Thames. Sarah Owen
Sarah Mei Li Owen (; born 11 January 1983) is a British politician and trade unionist serving as Member of Parliament (MP) for Luton North since 2019. A member of the Labour Party, she has served Shadow Minister for Local Government and Faith since October 2022, having previously served as Shadow Minister for Homelessness, Rough Sleeping and Faith in the same shadow department between December 2021 and October 2022. Owen is mixed heritage and the first MP of South East Asian ancestry. She states that her "mother's side of the family are Malaysian and a mix of Singaporean and Nonya with Chinese ancestors." Leighton Buzzard Light Railway
The Leighton Buzzard Light Railway (LBLR) is a light railway in Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire, England. It operates on narrow-gauge track and is just under long. The line was built after the First World War to serve sand quarries north of the town. In the late 1960s the quarries switched to road transport and the railway was taken over by volunteers, who now run the line as a heritage railway. History Sand extraction A bed of Lower Cretaceous sand across Bedfordshire has been quarried on a small scale for centuries. The most significant occur around Leighton Buzzard. In the 19th century sand was carried by horse carts from quarries south of the town to be shipped on the Dunstable- Leighton Buzzard railway. The carts damaged roads and resulted in claims for compensation against the quarry owners from Bedfordshire County Council.
